Was wondering if people had had any success or otherwise with those deflectors at the back of 4WDs that supposedly deflects a bit of air down and keeps the dust from building up on the back of the vehicle.
I live in the
Pilbara and don’t see many vehicles with them fitted so am guessing they don’t do much but thought I would give it a try if there were some positive responses.
All ears.

I had one fitted to the Patrol for 3 years and really could not tell you if they have made any marked difference.
We travel a lot of dusty roads with the 4WD club and I still get dust build up on the rear. They look good but not too sure how
well they work.
I think in hindsight that I could have spent the money on something more practicable.

I have one at the top of the back door of the Prado. Before I put a full ARB Roof Rack on it was doing a good job of blowing heavy dust buildup off the back window on dusty tracks. Since fitting the roof rack the airflow is much more turbulent back there by the time the air goes through all that bar work and the dust deflector does not seem to do anywhere near as good a job. I have noticed several times the dust building up on the back window more than it previously did on similar tracks.
So yes, good things until you put a roof rack on.
Cheers

The previous owner of my Prado fitted one. I don't have a roof rack (tow a trailer instead) and the dust wing seems to work quite
well. I get very little dust build up on the back window / back door but a lot gathers on the bumper bar presumably because the redirected air blows the dust straight down onto the first large horizontal surface.

Thanks for the replies.
I am using a roof rack and the dust on the window doesn’t bother me, was thinking more of trying to keep the bumper area cleaner from an unpacking point of view when
camping.
Looks like they won’t really do what I am after anyhow, but worth asking the question.

Spinifex,
IMO, they are useful for lift up tailgate vehicles where the dust drops inside the vehicle. Opening rear door vehicles - probably doesn't matter.
For dust on the rear step, I had a drop down plastic flap mounted on the Prados.
Now with the 79series, I don't have a back step or a tailgate!! Come to think of it, the dust doesn't matter anymore.
