Hi All,
I have read on this
forum several times regarding the stronger gearbox and the model number has been quoted.
I have been looking at my 80 Series today and found on the plate on the firewall it has the code H150F on the section called "Trans".
My 80 is the very first of them built in 6/90 with a 1HZ engine. I have an aftermarket turbo fitted since brand new.
Can someone advise as to what the ID number is for the stronger gearbox and when it became available?
I do not currently have any gearbox problems at all (except for the standard 2nd gear issue when cold) but occasionally see second hand gearboxes advertised and would like to know which model to look for.
Thanks,
Brett

Brett, I think Toyota may be the only ones who could answer that.

The 80 series came out with the H150F and the H151F. The only real difference is in the ratios, the H151F gears are taller (except for 4th). The 100 series and the 78 series N/A 4.2's came out with the R151F, a much smaller unit apparently derived from the Supra. The units fitted in the 78 series prior to 2003 were particularly troublesome. Perhaps these are the model numbers you have seen bandied around?
The R151F in my Landcruiser failed and I'm replacing it with an H150F. I would also be interested to know of the weaknesses of the H series gearboxes. Casper

Yeah sorry, only 1st and 2nd are different between the H150F and the H151F. It's the R151F that's taller than the H150F everywhere except 4th. Casper

Gday
The H series of boxes in the 80 series were and are very strong, other than the shift quality in the early ones, they are trouble free. Its best to use Castrol vmx-m or better in them to get the shift happening smoothly....1,2 and 3rd are higher in the h151, but not by much....the h151 came out behind twincam petrol and turbo diesel only. The 150 was 3f and 1hz material, they can be interchangedm but the input shafts are all different on the 150's but thesame in the 151's but interchangeable...does that make sense????
To change out an R gearbox, you will also need a transfer input gear, as the splines out of the 5 speeds are different.
There is a good h150 gearbox for sale at
Brisbane on ebay at the moment with part time case for $800 starting price....if that helps anyone.

OOps 1993 or later had tripple synchros, and shifted better (a bit) castrol vmx-m is the best oil without going real expensive stuff.

Andrew, thanks it's nice to know I've made the right decision! I've got a secondhand H150F from a 2003 HDJ79. I tried swapping the input gear from the HZJ105 part time transfer case with one from a dud 80 series part time box, but the gear profiles were different. A call to Toyota and the idler gears in the HDJ and HZJ cases have different part numbers so I've taken the surefire approach and got an 80 series case as
well - maybe that was not necessary...

Hi big woody
If you want to fix second gear dump the oil and put some
Caltex Textran in it or
Mobil 424 Fluid. You will be amazed at the difference in the changes.
The cruiser's don't like the EP in gear oils.

Guys,
For Toyota model specific stuff, you might find the answer on Land Cruiser Owners OnLine - you'll find a list specific to the 80 series, and some pretty knowledgeable blokes.
Not knocking the team around here! - Exploroz is great, but the market base is generic - if you've got a specific 80 series question, I'd be throwing it to LCOOL

Thanks Guys,
That is exactly the info I was after.
I will drop the oil and try the Castrol oil as suggested although
mine will only play up in the first km after a cold take off. After that it is perfect for the rest of the day once there is some temperature in the oil. I have fully synthetic oil in the boxes at the moment.
Thanks again,
Brett
