Starting Problem, Nissan patrol 98 GU 4.2 diesel (non standard turbo fitted)
(1). Cold morning, Turn ignition on to pre-heat, Wait for glow plug light to go out (relay continuing to click on and off, Head lights dim with every click of the relay this happens after glow plug light has gone out, (Relay clicks around 6-8 times) then when you start the engine it seems to run on just like pre-ignition, Shakes the vehicle. But once started it idles really
well. There is no problem with power etc…
(2). Shuting down, Turn ignition off motor runs on shaking the vehical until it finally stops. This all generally happens when the motor is cold, and when motor is running at normal temperature it seems fine, But sometimes shutdown real rough like
Summary
This problem has been ongoing since I purchased the vehicle,
The turbo was fitted after purchase also I have rebuilt the lift pump and fitted new injectors had the glow plugs tested as
well as the glow systems i.e. relays wiring etc, I have double checked the timing had valve clearances down bled the system etc, etc

1 sounds like an air leak into the fuel lines... when I changed fuel filter, it did the same, and was air in the system.

If Truckster is right, then this is another reason to consider fitting a Facet pump. I've fitted one on the chassis rail, just forward of the OE transfer pump.
The Facet pump provides a 'positive' fuel flow from the
tank to the filter and on to the main pump etc. It runs as soon as the ignition is turned on (you can hear it ticking away while you wait for the glow plugs to do their trick).
However, I don't know about this business of the relays clicking 6 to 8 times etc?
Mine clicks only once, a couple of seconds after the glow plug light goes off. I can also tell when the relay shuts off by watching the voltmeter. When the ignition is first turned on (with all the idiot lights and buzzers going off their collective dials), the voltmeter needle drops to a certain place (lets say about 11.6v). Then the glow plug light goes off but the needle stays put. A couple of seconds later (if that), the relay clicks off and the voltmeter needle moves/jerks to about 11.8v. That is when I hit the starter and she fires every time.
I HATE switching the motor off again until the
water temp gauge is at "normal". That is one of the reasons I bought the Feroza.......previously, to drive the 2klm to work, I'd have to either idle the Patrol for 10 minutes to get it up to being anywhere near operating temp, or otherwise I'd go for a 10klm drive to warm the thing up. If I didn't do that (and just drove the 2 klm to work and switched it off again), the temp gauge wouldn't have even started to register and when I shut off it would shake and bang and shudder etc...(not a nice feeling at all).
Cheers
Roachie

or instead of fitting anything, bleed the system properly?

It won't be air in the system, any air will bleed itself in a few minutes and this would only occur after a filter change.
This sounds like an ongoing problem if its happening all the time

Do you always start the engine with the headlights ON ?
