Hi im thinking of buying a holden cross 8 and was wondering if anyone has one and if so could they let me know what they think of them.

I drive a cross 6 with work and it is the first work car that I have fallen in love with.
Maybe I'm just a boy at heart but I think it's great. Haven't taken it serious 4WDing but it handles the dirt roads brilliantly. Maybe cos its a red one!!
It would have some problems with the poor arrival, departure and ramp over angles on more rugged terrain. Not a lot of leg room in the back unless your under 10 either but for my use, it's great. Don't put your foot down hard when going up a
hill as the fuel consumption tends to drop a bit LOL

Hi Des,
From what you are not saying in regard to fuel consumption, I take it that it can best be described as not too bad dropping to sh**house under load.
Still if it's a company ute and you don't own the company, why worry.
I would imagine that the Cross 8 may be a tad thirstier.
My research indicates that a petrol L/Cruiser may be more economical .
Still it looks good and is made by GMH so it must be OK LOL

Disco, A while a go I reset the fuel consumption setting and put the boot in on a long steepish
hill and got a reading of 45l per 100 k's from a standing start. LOL I average around 11.5 l/100 on normal driving which is predominantly country roads. The fuel consumption figures would be better than the petrol cruiser and on par with the TD models however you can't compare the vehicles.

Truth be known Des, even a Leyland P76 would feel good after getting out of your TRUCK. Maybe its the fact that the Cross 6 at least goes around corners on the dirt, not like dunni dores LOL

At least MY truck doesn't spend all it's time at the repair yard. Can't be said the same for yours LOL. Like the P76,
mine will still be a collectors piece when it's day is done.

Mitsi hasn't been in for repairs at all "YET" touch wood. The Lady of the houses Mazda 3 was the one always in being repaired. Maybe it was the woman driver thing...... but I didn't say that.

Not trying to be rude but in all honesty they are far from being a 4wd and dirt roads are about it.

Hi, My son's employer has a cross 8 and they recently took it to Kalgoorlie and he said it sucked juice like mad and whats more it took premium only. Would check out the economy figures real carefully.

My wagon is very similar except for the HSV workover, and the coil rear instead leaf whiuch the x-8 has. Also, you get better off-bitumen tyres on the x-8.
If you're worried abt fuel consumption, then rethink the v8 bit, whether holden/disco/jeep, whatever.
If u go in eyes wide open, pay the xtra here and there for fuel, but enjoy the power and engine roar (when appropriate), you'll have a grin from ear to ear.
We went up
Lawn Hill, stacked all the gear inside the wagon, oztent/fridge/genny/etc, etc, travelled in Caprice-comfort, XR6 Turbo pace (where appropriate), ave 13.6l/100 for 4500ks.
The wagon has averaged 14.6l/100 over the 41000ks now - mostly boring city taffic. If you only do peak hour\stop-start, expect 20l/100.
By the way, I filled up yesterday @ $1.07/L while diesel at same servo was $1.30.

I own a Cross6 (Single Cab), Brilliant car to drive. As for off-road ability
well- that's not what this car was made for. That said, the traction control system seems to work fairly
well, the clearance, approach and departure angles will stop you
well before the 4x4 system is at its limit. The OE tyres on the Cross8 will be a limiting factor on the dirt as
well. I guess it depends on what you want from the car. If you're looking for a ute that doesn't get tail-happy in the wet, with some limited offroad ability, then it might be for you.
I've had
mine on
the beach at Double Island quite a few times, and just completed a trip that included the
Plenty Highway,
Oodnadatta & Strzelecki tracks, the car performed flawlessly. Its a very comfortable car to drive.

I have never sat in one!
However my neighbour was dead keen on buying one until his kids climbed into the back
seat.
Apparently the
seat back is as near to vertical as can be and the kids found it uncomfortable even on a test drive...
Might pay to take the family on the test drive

If your putting the fuel in yourself don't buy a X8. A V8 Landcruiser is more economical.
The 6's aren't bad but the V8 is a serious guzzler.
They're not that flash off road and probably best suited to boggy paddocks , drive ways and boggy building sites.

Perhaps someone with a V8 cruiser could post their overall average to support the claim that they are more economical.
I suspect service costs for V8 cruiser are substantially more expensive also - i know my diesel 80 series was substantially dearer than the V8 AWD Holden.

Surely the most practical variation of the Commodore AWDs would be the v6 wagon on LPG. The back seats of the dual cab are useless and the v8 would have a standard
tank running empty before you left the suburbs.

4WDMonthly magazine did a test of the Holden utes a while back. The had very few nice things to say about them, although you would expect as much from that bunch, but I will always remember the last sentence of the article, and it said.................
"If holden stop calling this a 4WD, then we'll stop calling it a heap of bleep "

I haven't owned one but have driven several and found the steering very heavy (a Mack Titan would be easier to steer) making them a bit of a pig to handle . Apparently they are very very thirsty and being an MA category vehicle they do not meet the criteria of an off-road passenger vehicle ie MC category. I think you just have to look at how many you (don't) see on the roads to see they are not very popular.
