I would be interested to hear from anybody that has had 5th gear fail on their GU Patrol that has had it fixed "under warranty" outside of the scheduled Nissan warranty period.
I would like to know what problems you may have experienced & how you went about getting Nissan to repair it under their 'Customer Satisfaction Policy'
At this stage we are getting relatively negative response from the dealers.
It is a 2001 GU 4.2TD with around 120,000km.

Customer Satisfaction Policy!!!! Thats a funny name to call what is usually a fight to get anything fixed without the customer putting his hand in his pocket. They should call it " The Blank Look Policy". Michael

A letter to customer relations manager in Melbourne should do the trick, it worked for our 3.0 L Gu rebuild. Good luck

The rabbits are hatching everywhere, should be ripe for the picking soon, I got 2 last night until the old LC60 died leaving me up the back of the farm with a 40 minute walk home after 11.
We'll have to pick a weekend soon, your mother in law will be so pleased........

Shaker,
Which month 2001??

In Nov. '04 when mine (built May, regd. June '99) went, the dealer fixed it expecting Nissan to cover it..
Unfortunately, Nissan rejected the claim, saying that the vehicle was "too old", and that they would not cover it.. Bugga!!!
Could have been worse I suppose, as the dealers told me that they would charge me only that which Nissan would have paid them to do the job (a little under $900.00 in my case)...

The bottom line, as explained to me by the dealer, is that Nissan are/were covering this 5th gear failure for 5 years or 200,000 km (whichever occurs first), and mine was 5 months past the 5 yr cut-off when the failure occurred... (Bugga!!)

Good luck with it;-))

My Uncle had his covered to the tune of $1500 when his let go in Norseman last year. His is a 2001 model (Jan I think) and at the time had 120 or 130K on the clock.
I told him to write a letter to Melb, which he did and low and behold the check was in the mail when he got back to QLD. He has had 4 Patrols, which he mentioned, so I don't know if that had any bearing on their payout.

I also have this same model but treat mine like a 4 speed and it is still going with 275K on the clock so I doubt whether they would cover mine now even if it did go.

Cheers and good luck.
Trevor.

I did have to say something didn't I.

Just changed the gearbox oil today and it came out rusty orange/red. This is generally associated as a pre cursor to the spline shaft letting go. So I am now hunting for quotes. GRRRRRRRRR I am MAD.

I have a 2001 4.2TD Patrol (purchased new May 2001, now with 125,000 on the clock). 5th geat blew up in July this year a day out of Perth after travelling from Brisbane. Perth dealer said it was a known fault with Patrols manufactured during a certain period (which mine was).

Dealer in Perth fixed it at my cost (>$3000) and logged a Tec Line Contact with Nissan. I'm about to contact them now as I have just got back to Brisbane from my travels across Oz. Hope they come to the party to some extent.

Shaker, Call Nissan Customer Service NOT the dealers and speak directly to them. Mine is currently at City Nissan in Melb being replaced under warranty 8 months out of warranty.

Email me and I can give u the contact at Cust Serv.

All went well for me, mine was 5 yrs and 8 mths in my care, 8 mths out of extended warrantly and 79000 km, its a common problem.

Hmmmm......
How'd ya manage that, Bonz???

When mine went (2yrs ago), it was 5yrs & 5 mths w/- roughly the same kms as yours..
When I was informed (by dealer) that Nissan had rejected the claim, I did indeed get straight on the ol' dog'n'bone to Nissan Custome Service, and they didn't want to know about it (citing the 5yr/200000km thing).... Bugga!!!

I did not have the extended warranty, maybe that might have made a difference (??)..
Oh well, I'm over it now... Bugga!!!!!!

Catch ya later.. Ed. C

Well Ed I guess I just got them on a good day, the one thing I did do under instruction from a clever man was go straight to Nissan Customer Service and they said all the right things and told me to then go to the dealer to check things out.

I am most impressed, picked it up today and its as tight as a new box, will be giving it a try this weekend somewhere int he Vic High Country
