We're about to become
grey nomads and don't want to change our 1998 V6 Camry as it has only just reached 100,000 km's. We have been told we cannot tow more than 1200kgs. What size and possibly make of van would anyone suggest we get for a round the block trip. Our budget is around $15,000. Any suggestions welcome. Thanks.

Hi there Floydy, I would check the tow weight as I had 94 camry with the 2.2 4 cylinder and my tow weight was higher (in the service books) than that use to tow my inboard ski boat with it no problems. Why not try a pop top van less wind resistance, may need a trans mission cooler as Im sure the V6 camry doesnt have one, but you will have no problems pulling one power wise. There are plenty of pop tops for that sort of money maybe not new but will serve you
well. Go for it and enjoy, I would reccomend electric brakes be added to van and controller in vehicle for added safety. Regards Steve M

Thanks Steve for all the information you have given us. Yes, we were thinking of a secondhand caravan. Just had a few doubts with the Camry as it is a front wheel drive and some "experts" have told us it wasn't a particularly good vehicle to tow with.

Floydy,
We're heading off soon too. Our van is a Golf 17ft semi off road and has a tare (Unladen) weight of 1260kg. Laden it is 1560kg. I'm not keen on front wheel drive for towing personally. Might be worthwhile concidering buying a falcon and tow a little more weight.
Regards
Greg

Thanks Greg. We have considered buying a Commodore or a Falcon but can't quite decide which way to go.

The Viscount Aerolite Pop Top was under 1 tonne as I recall, of course you have to be careful what you load it up with. They are getting a bit old now, a bit like me I guess???
Alternatively you might find an A Van that would fit your needs, these are fold up little things, quite good actually and more space than appears on the outside.
Then you have the newer rear entry vans that most of the major manufacturers make now they are ususally less than 3.6 metres long and I think some are under 1 tonne tare.

Thanks Notso, I hadn't thought of an A Van.

Welcome to the
grey nomads, its a great life. As no one has posted a comment yet I will have a go at answering your question. If you only have a towing capacity of 1200Kg you are going to be quite restricted in the size of van as that includes load as
well. Also you need to know your legal ball weight eg max weight on the tow ball. You need to go to a caravan sales yard and have a talk to them and see what is available within these weight limits. Best of luck Nav.

If your unsure how it will tow, why not hire a couple of different ones over a couple of mths/weeks to see how it actually tows, and if your happy with it..

Hi Truckster, our ball weight is 80kg so we will only be able to tow something very light - about 800kg and to allow for what we put in it! Anyway, thanks for all your tips. May see you on the road in the not too distant future.

Wellcome to the road. I have a 1998 Camry V6 Conquest, a much underrated car but not a great towing vehicle and lousy clearance. You can get from Toyota an upgraded
suspension for towing but I don't know how effective it is.
Good luck.

Thanks Ewin for your help. I think it looks as though we're going to have to change the car after all. A new
suspension would be too costly having regard for the age of the car. Regards.

Hi Floydy,
Just some info on our set-up to give you some idea
Avan Cruisliner 900kg dry
ball weight as measured on delivery was 93kg,
both figures
well within the Commodore wagon's specs - we have a 2100gk tow kit incidently but they have a 1200 and 1600 kit also.
