How does the 4.8 Patrol Auto tow?

My Mum and Dad are about to buy a 19 foot Caravan, about 2200kg loaded.

They've decided that the Statesman V8 isn't legal, although powerful enough.

They're not much concerned about the fuel usage, they will go LPG. Their journeys will be essentially highway based, so the lack of outback LPG being available is irrelevant.

Just how does the 5 speed auto with the 4.8 work as a tow vehicle? I remember concerns of the 4 speed in the 4.2 and 4.5 Patrols. It apparently "hunted" for the right gear far too often.

Please...... no diesel comments, that is not the question I am asking.

We just need to know about the 4.8 auto.

hi Jim,

The 4.8 petrol that we have a Mt Dare is a superb tow vehicle, it has removed more than the odd vehicle from the mud. More than enough power. Wouldn't know about going down the bitumen, not something we experience every day.

I guess as you know Jimbo , the patrols with their long wheelbases
and low C of G make some of the best towers from the stability
point of view, and the 4.8 can put the most torque to the ground
of any of the models.

The 5 speed box is a delight to use on the road , but has tendency
to upchange to early on steep 4wd tracks which isn't an issue here.

It would probably be harder to find a better vehicle for that task.

I would probably choose my manual 4.8 on the basis of better engine
braking and longer pad life , but then I have recently changed all
the pads to my 4.8 for total cost $90 and a couple of hours on the grinder.

The auto of course would get on the line with a little less fuss, and the
box changes so smoothly it feels like sports car.

Just think if they got one , you might be able to borrow it !

4.8 Brilliant tow vehicle. Heavy on juice if you boot it. If you take it easy not too bad.
Check out the power and tourqe curves and they beat equivalent diesels hands down all over the rev range. I have just changed from a 4.8 to a 4.2 diesel for lots of reasons. Towing ability wasn't one of them.

Forgot to mention, if they go LPG make sure thay go Vapour Injection and put a upper cylinder lube kit on. It will then be fine.

Also forgot to mention, Auto box doesn't hunt. Really smooth and the 4.8 has so much power it doesn't struggle on hills.

in the newer ones nissan had to downgrade the engine specs a bit & took out the the sub fuel tank to meet omission laws, the new specs are 180kw & 400NM & 95 litres of fuel with ou the sub, i wouldn't think the power figures would make much differnce but the fuel might be a bit of a concern

the old specs where something like 188kw & 420 NM & the fuel tanks totaled was 131 litres with the main & sub

G'day Jimbo,

As already mentioned the vehicle drives very well under load. I don't own a 19' caravan but I tow a heavy trailer up to 1.4 tonnes as well as a well loaded vehicle with tinnie on top so the combined weight may be close to the mark - also I tow it on sand (unlikely to happen in your parents case). I really can't fault it as far as asking it to do this, it is smooth and I rarely have it hunting for gears.

Mine is the older variety so I can't tell you what the newer version is like. The only issue is that it can be thirsty and for that a larger tank and wallet might be required to give them distance. My consumption is about 5K/L in most circumstances on the bitumen, when fully loaded (as above) this can drop to about 4 and towing in the soft stuff it drops to 3.2.

I have towed all that and Rodeo and its camper trailer up a number of Simpson sand dunes, the power and smooth changes make this possible.

We have a Jackaroo 3 litre diesel and a 16'9" single axle van.
We were on our way to Narooma from from Vic along the coast.
We were overtaken by a 4.8 Patrol up one of the steep windy hills past Cann river with a 24' van in tow.
We were giving the Jack everything she had and the patrol passed us like we were standing still.
We caught up with them in Narooma. They were already set up and kicking back.
They couldn't have been happier with their vehicle. Fuel economy was only slightly more than our Diesel Jack which gets a little thirsty when working hard. We were using about 18l/100km diesel They quoted us around 20-22 l/100km with a significantly bigger load and not holding back on the horses.
