Hi all, I need to replace one of the auto free wheel hubs on my GU patrol, and Nissan want WAAAYYYY TOOOOO MMMUUCH so I'm gonna put on after market manual hubs.
I did a search on ebay and got one single solitary hit, and it wasn't even for a Nissan.
SO, there is a bunch in SA that will get some at a good price but they need a "group buy" to be able to get a good price.
Anyone interested?

Nonon - I fitted AVM manual hubs to my GU. Got them at ARB for $170 for the pair about 18 months ago. Easy to fit and only takes about 10 minutes each side.
Cheers
Pete

Search OL and other forums for history on AVM hubs.. they have a habit of going BANG!
Whats wrong with your hubs? you can get service kits for the GQ ones, not sure about GU...
There are also many in wreckers now,
well worth a try.. If you go to Outerlimits, message Giantracing. he wrecks Patrols, or even a wanted ad may get you a score or 2.

G'day nonon
I replaced my factory auto-locking hubs on my 01 series 2 with a set of manual hubs off a 99 DX GU which I picked up from a wrecker. Was years ago and can't remember what I paid for them only it was a fraction of the cost of the new genuine ones and cheaper than the AVM option at the time too.
If you find a some, be sure to get the bolts too because they are much shorter than the bolts which hold the auto locking hubs on.
Cheers
Brad

For what my opinion is worth FWH are the only to go I have had Auto hubs either fail or contribute to me getting stuck in the scrub . Now when I get off road engage hubs and dis-engage when I get back to the bitumen , never a problem.

Hi Dave, no argument from me here. Of 4 previously owned forby's, this is the first with auto FWhubs. They are both good and bad.
These ones on the GU patrol are no trouble at all when locked in manually. However the auto part of it is sometimes a guessing game, and these ones have more than once not unlocked themselves until I'm on the bitumen and I'm doing highway speeds and then all of a sudden one has tried to re-engage, and the noise of teeth grinding at 100 klm/H is not something you want to hear.
These ones are really good if say you need to turn around somewhere, you go off the road and all of a sudden the rear end is sinking, FAST. You just pull the little leaver down and it's in 4WD, you scoot out of trouble, stop, move it out of 4WD and continue on. Then all of a sudden one tries to engage again!!! Scary, dude.
Anyway, one of 'em is now buggered and Nissan want over $700.00 each for either the auto one or the manual one. NO THANKS.

An added benefit of free wheeling hubs is the ability to put your vehicle in low range 2 wheel drive (no drive to front
wheels when hubs unlocked) for reverse
parking your caravan or trailer, very handy indeed.
