Hi All,
Just wondering if anyone has ever camped in the Yalata Indigenous Protected Area, West Coast of South Australia, in the camping areas near the coast. I know about the required permits, but after details from people that have stayed there, and what they thought of their stay.

Thanks

Hi Stephen,

I highly recommend them - if you can get someone to issue you a permit.

The country is beautiful. The tracks in there mostly not too bad. Some serious sand right near the coast making access to some of them a challenge.

Most of them are set up back from the beach behind one sandhill - some protection, but sometimes not much ;-) Expect to tie down your [everything] well, but it didn't make it any more unpleasant for us really.

We were with camper trailers and tents.

Some of the campsites are pretty small (really just one or two vehicle) but depending on what you want to do there, they each have their different interests.

The fishing is great, although the Yalata folks have had problems with some fishing groups leaving a big mess. Apparently one of the best beach/rock fishing spots around and pretty much a secret. I'm not a serious fisherman, but still had a lot of fun, success and enjoyment.

Drop me a PM if you want more info, or are having trouble getting a permit - I do know some folks who may be able to help.

Ciao for now
Andrew.

Hi Andrew,
Thanks for that. I have been told you can get permits from either Ceduna or at the Yalata Roadhouse. Is this correct?

Nup.

Certainly Yalata Roadhouse has been closed - some say condemned. To my knowledge it has not opened.

You could find the Yalata Community office (I think they have one) in Ceduna and try there, but they were part way through a big management shake-up and getting a permit was like pulling teeth.

There was some talk that they were going to have the people at the Head of the Bight issue permits (from memory it is another 70 ks on from most of the campsites if you're coming from the East), but when I was there I asked and they knew nothing about it.

There is the Yalata Community Office at Yalata and if they are up and running again, they may be able to help.

If you have trouble, let me know in the next week or so, and I'll see if I can help - I'm away for a good month or so (Simpson, Channel Country, etc) so you'll need to work on it now if you want my help.

I know they had some concerns about behavioural issues and the lack of rangers to manage the sites - if the lack of rangers issue still persists, you might have trouble.

When are you planning on travelling?

Ciao for now
Andrew.

You may have had trouble because they only have a restricted number of camp sites and will only let enough people in to fill those sites. Apart from that you can get a day pass for 24 hrs, but can't camp there! except in designated camp sites which are all taken. Here's a link to bookings, as you can see over the peak fishing time (late spring/summer) most campsites are gone but other times you should be able to get a permit. Good luck, beautiful (my favourite) neck of the woods.

p.s. be sure to observe the stringent rules on access routes/camping/alcohol/firearms as the penalties are huge!
