Hi Rod.
You have configured Ozie to work with the Garmin 12? If not go File - configuration - Com & configure the com port. I found, when using the GPS11+ with a USB to serial adaptor that I had to try different com port settings until I found one that worked.
Hope this is of help - Tony (http://www.qsl.net/vk3cat)

Hi Rodney,

I have had this problem many times with my Garmin but only when using USB ports. If I use the serial cable, although a bit slower I have no problems.

The only way I have ever been able to get it working again and this has not worked every time is to log onto the Garmin website and update the software for for GPS unit. Also update the Garmin USB driver to the latest version.
While you are there if you have any Mapsource products like Trip & Waypoint Manager etc. you may as well update to the latest version also.

I have almost blown a valve over this issue before so good luck,

Brett

Make sure you also have the GPS set to the right settings in the comms setup area on the unit

If you dont get a solution here there are quite a number of good posts on this subject.
I've been through similar with a GPS76. Yes you need to set the com port in OziExplorer but you need to know which one it is. With USB the com port it connects to is not always the same, so you have to work out which one the GPS is using. Yes you could experiment to find the right com port or another way I found to do it is to go to device manager (control panel/system/hardware/device manager) and look at your com ports and you will see which one is plugged into your serial adapter. ( I assume if you have a GPS 12 you are using a serial adaptor ?) You can then set the right com port in the configure part of Ozi Explorer. As the others have said, you need to check the other settings also.
(The reference to device manager assumes Windows XP)

For a start we need to sought out exactly what model garmin GPS you have. The only 12 model Garmin 12 had was a 12X and 12XL and they definetly did not have USB connection.

If you are talking about a "garmin 12 channel receiver" most garmins are 12 channel receivers. So you really need to advise which garmin model you have.

My guess is that it is either a Garmin MAP60C or Map60CS or something similar.

Anyway - did your garmin come with Garmin MAPSOURCE? The MAPSOURCE CD actually contains the drivers needed to operate USB type Garmins.

The Garmin 12 had a serial interface cable, so with a serial USB adaptor it can effectively have a USB interface.

I tend to agree with the above. As far as I know the Garmin 12 has a serial port.
It appears there are adaptors and there are adaptors.
I originally used a Jaycar serial-usb adaptor with my Garmin II+, and had software conflicts with my mouse, and when it did work, it kept changing its serial port number (usually changing from port 5 to port 6 and back). I believe I am not alone with this problem.
I have since picked up a Wiretek serial-usb adaptor which works faultlessley and I can select the port number I want in the setup screen, and it stays there. And there appears to be support for the Wiretek on the web, whereas the Jaycar is an orphan for software updates.
The Jaycar adaptor is now in the bin.

Hi Rod,

USB Ports (Grrrrrrr...) Firstly make sure Ozi is configured for your Garmin Model - this probably won't be the problem. Your USB port (when you connect your Garmin to the computer) has most probably configured itself to a com port number bigger that No8. This is because as you attach USB devices, the computer assign's a port number to it so it knows where it is. Unfortunatly the number keeps increasing and does not get reset (or anything) when you unplug a device, so you may have com port assignments going up to 15 (or more). Ozi will only work with up to 8 com port numbers (I think). What you have to do is to re-configure the USB com port number assigned to your Garmin to under 8, then tell Ozi the same com port number. Once configured and working (Hmph!) only attach the GPS to the SAME UBS port.

Rod,
Just a couple of learnings from when I was getting my GPS II+ to work on my new laptop which has no serial port. Firstly, the USB to Serial cable is important - the cheaper ones do not seem to work at all. I ended up buying the Garmin one and it is fine. Secondly, I found it useful to always plug the cable into the same USB port. If you change USB ports, I think that Windows changes the COM port numbers.
