Hi Guys,

Has anybody seen this sort of thing before?

Occasionally, throttle seems to be sticking and not returning to idle.

The very first time it happenned in the other direction ie. wouldn't accelerate past about 2000 rpm.

Since then it's been sticking occasionally - notice it on gear change (always changing up) - revs to around 3500 - 4000 rpm.

Stamping on the accelerator a few times has managed to free it on most occasions - did resort to turning the ignition off on one occasion.

Respected mechanics can't find anything, have lubricated cable etc.

2002 Patrol TD4.2 with Autron cruise control. Cruise control has been off for every occurrence.

Timing could be worse, I suppose - off to Red Centre for Vic School hols!

Appreciate the benefit of anybody's relevant experience

Thanks & Regards

If its a carby vehicle then it could be wearing throttle linkages or shaft.........I have had that problem.

Its also possible that the cable has a small fray in it somewhere.

Another I have seen is where the ends jump out of there holders ie in the cab at the acelerator.

I'd be disconnecting the throttle cable where it attaches under the bonnet. Check that the cable is "free" to move in both directions. Check that the throttle mechanism itself will turn in both directions quite freely as well. It could be a buggared return spring. I'd also look at getting the Autron set-up temporarily disconnected, as that may be causing the problem in the 1st place due to a sticking cable etc.

Good luck........ most of the time problems are caused by after-market stuff.

Cheers

I once saw where a mechaninc "adjusted" the throttle cable to get the idle speed right and actually had bent the end of the shroud, causing the throttle to stick.

Hi PGK,

Had a similar problem with my 4x4.

Check the end of the of the cable that goes to your cruise control by manually opening the butterfly. Mine was becoming worn and frayed, causing to not slide freely inside the outer cable.

Check that the linkage is not snaging on the hand throttle cable. This is a separate cable, check the operation of this. Michael

Thanks all

Disconnected the Cruise control - sticking still occurred

Checked hand throttle cable - free, even when throttle was stuck

Back from the trip & have had no sticking throttle problem since the Mereenie Loop Rd - seems as though something has rattled back into place.

I'm none the wiser and likely to revert to blissful ignorance!

Um, what's a flux capacitor?
