Hi all,
I have a '94 GXL Petrol 80 Series 1FZ-FE with two oil related problems. The oil in it is Penrite HPR15 (Semi Synthetic 15W-50 or 60 I think) and is approx 5000km's old.
First problem has been present regardless of what oil I use and that is that it's fairly difficult to get an accurate oil level reading off the dipstick. The oil is usually 'smeared' a fair way up the dipstick and there is no definite 'level'. This is the case whether the truck is hot, or has been sitting level all night and is stone cold. Any ideas??
Second problem is, the oil light has started to come on lately. As far as I can determine (considering problem #1) the oil is 3/4 the way up from the add line and the full line so the light shouldn't be coming on yet for low oil level should it? Also is this standard oil usage for this sort of truck with 220k on it? The other thing is that the oil pressure gauge (standard in dash type) shows good pressure so this prob isn't the cause for the oil light either! Any ideas???
Thanks for reading and I hope someone can shed some light on my probs!
Cheers
Scoey!

On my 92 1 fz-fe (from about 300,00 plus)I was running valvoline xld and oil pressure started to drop even though I used no oil between changes done @ 10K.
I changed to XLD premium and oil pressure reading went back to normal .
I now find however that the oil light sometimes comes on after between 8-9,000km or even earlier if i do a long day say 1000-1200km.and I need to add a pint to get thru to the next service.
I guess the evaporation of contaminants in the oil lowers the level when truck runs hard.Light doesnt come on if only short trippping.
vehicle now has 400,000km plus and never been opened up so cannot complain.
cheers

G'day Scoey
I have a 96 with a few more k's than yours.
Just wipe dip stick and re-read. May take a couple of goes but you'll get a clean read.
My light comes on when the reading is near the bottom mark. Just keep it topped up and no light.
Mine uses a bit of oil but not enough to worry about.
I change at about 10,000 ks.
I use bleep s oil (from Sunshine State 4WD at Archerfield). Have used that for yonks.
Cheers from the Moose

Apparently the oil I use has activated the naughty word catcher. It's F U C H S. (Or maybe I typed it in wrong:-)

Gday Scoey
The toyota genius's designed their engines with a low oil level sensor in the sump. Most have these. When the oil gets to a certain level the float puts the light on. When they play up the light tends to flash on as
well.
However I have just converted a 1HZ 100 series to a 1HDT and it has no low oil level sensor. Try unplugging it for awhile and see if this rectifies the light as I think they are expensive.
My second comment is 15/50 or 60 oil is way to thick. The later 1FZ FE engines are recommended to run a 10w/30 oil for optimum fuel economy and quick lubrication on start up however a 15w/40 SL grade oil is just as good. In my workshop most get 15w/40 and once this engine is in a 100 series I put 10w/30 SL oil in them. I am a promoter of the modern day thin engine oils.
Hope this helps
