I'm about to go out and do a training ride for Around the Bay in A Day (Melbourne) in October...and I was wondering if there are any other exploroz members who are cyclists and are also going in this event. Just curious. It would be nice to catch up with you on the day....

Footloose,

Ouch!! Footloose the blisters can be in places I'm too ladylike to talk about!!!
Just did 70kms - that six weeks holiday has put me way behind schedule and I'm feeling it!!

not going in this event (I'm from Adelaide) but I will be cycling around Australia next year for Kidney Health Australia, from January to the end of October. My website is www.renalride.com I cycled the Nullarbor last year in 11 days and had the most amazing time. It was interesting that the road train drivers and 4WDrs were the friendliest and most helpful.
Cheers. I hope to see you on the road somewhere.

Mag4wheels,

That really is a great cause. Good on you!! I bet cycling the Nullabor was a wonderful experience. I'd love to catch up some time. If you're cycling through the Mallee in Victoria on your around Australia ride I might be able to get our local team (Beulah Blue Flames) to do part of it with you.

We ride each year in the Murray to Moyne and raise money for our local hospital.

Hope you get lots of tail winds!!

Thanks footloose and viv.
Sorry, viv. I'll be hugging the coast as much as possible, following the Great Ocean Road in January, cycling around Tassie, then continuing along the Victorian coast. It would be great if any cyclists want to join in, though. Check out my website closer to the time, or contact me if you need any details.
Good luck too with your cycling team.
And yes, cycling the Nullarbor was awesome, particularly during Spring. The whales were still around in October too, so I was spoilt with wildflowers and whales.

Viv, I have a friend who has done it and his training partners prefer not to inflict as much pain. Have you thought about the Murray to Moyne? I believe that can be a fun ride as it is a relay of sorts.

Hello John,

This is going to be my second Around the Bay and this time I'm doing the Legends!! That's 250kms in the day. The only thing legendary about it will be the amount of time I take to complete it!! Ah well..there's always a taxi!!

I've done four Murray to Moynes..it's a great event. Yes, it's a relay. Teams leave from either Echuca, Swan Hill or Mildura and ride to Port Fairy over the week end. Each team puts a group of the road, then the bus goes on and another group get out and ride when the first team catches up..sort of tag team!! Then we all ride from Hamilton to Port Fairy which is approx 80-90kms depending which way you are allotted to ride. They split the riders up between Macarthur and Penshurst. Everyone wants to do the Penshurst way..too many hills the other!! Overall we ride about 200kms each for the week end.

The best thing about it is that we raise money for our local hospital which is now only a campus of Rural Northwest Health. We have enabled them to purchase many items of equipment with our fund raising.

It is fun...but not if you get head winds all the way as sometimes happens. Then it's like Chinese Water Torture...on wheels...with a hard seat!!!

Oh no, John, not me!!

On my first M2Moyne I rode through Cavendish late at night and all the town were out cheering. We thought how encouraging they were but later found out that the Cavendish team were following us..and they were riding in the nude.

I have enough trouble with the bike seat without doing that!!

I also think that wearing lycra should be a criminal offence but the padded pants are essential and so I put my "fashion sense" away and go for comfort!!

It's been hard getting back into training after six weeks holiday. I've done 150kms this week and have to build it up over the next four. Sometimes I wonder about my sanity!!

I heard about the Cavendish story. I have a few friends in the Timboon Cruisers. That level of fitness is scary though Viv. I was amazed at the gear of the cyclists at the Commonwealth Games where I was handling the bikes at security in the village. Talking with the riders too, seeing them through, checking their accreditation.

I think I know a little about the lycra too, have some cycle pants too, but people really should turn away when they are present if I am in them. After a dinner last year I was given a Rabobank shirt so family gave me the pants to match! Horror of horrors.

Too late mate, I don't think they would do anything to attract to add to the gene pool. The Rabobank top looks good on me though, but I don't think it does much for the bank ;-)
