Need help in deciding what sort of 4x4 to buy looking at 100 series cruiser, or a more affordable GU read a lot of reports about 3 litre turbo engine problems.
Should i consider anyother vechicles ? Deisel or Petrol?.
Will be using vechicle soley for touring and camping so what extras would i need and what would be a ruff price guide.
Any one got a rig they want to sell Plan on spending about $30,000

For mainly touring/camping, go for a diesel.
There are way to many extra's available, so individual setup is something that comes with experience (and stuffup's) :)
Either the toyo or nissan will do the job, but so will alot of other makes. You need to provide alot more detail on the who, what, where, etc before that question can really be answered. And even then, it still comes down to personal choice.
Looking to buy?........................try the trader button at the top of the page as a good place to start.

You should look at a 100 series DIESEL Toyota Landcruiser....DX ( Barn Door) Model

You probably wont need any extras...Landcruisers are the real unit for outback travel and treated with respact...will see you through many glorious trips ..albeit uneventfull ..Enjoy !!

4.2l TD GU2 ST Patrol with up to 150km
4.2l TD-6 Intercooled GU3 ST Patrol with up to 200km
4.8l petrol ST (or ST-L if look hard enough) 5spd Auto/man with less than 100km
Personal opinion: avoid the 3L

The DX Cruiser would be (and is ) a great truck, but:
no factory turbo
no good powered fings (windows ect)
weaker gearbox than patrol (but the 2000 mod GU's have the dodgy box so avoid them)
bloody basic (could be a bonus for some though)

As you'd probably know GU has live axles, coil ends, barn doors, roof rails, ridicoulsy tough drivetrains so fun times are ahead. Also GU's have auto/man front hubs, so no need to get out and lock em!.
If you are going to tour and dont mind getting up to cruising speed a bit slower go diesel, if want dunnydore performance go the petrol. Auto or manual; I am not getting involved in that one but the 5sp tiptronic box in the 4.8 is a great bit of kit.)
GXL / St spec or DX spec will depend on what your prepared to live with.
For info I've got a 2.8 TD-6 GU ST patrol (couldn't find me a 4.2 for 'acceptable' moolah and the 3.0l.....).
What ever you do, check records, crawl in/out/through it, drive it for as long as possible, stick a torch in the engine bay, take your mechanic/mates/mother-in-law if they know what to look for and have a full writtten inspection done by mechanic/state auto care mob. Then haggle like your life depended on it and don't be afraid to walk away and let them call you if they don't want to sell for what your willing to pay as a nights sleep can do wonderous things if they need to sell it.

My eyes may be a bit shwisenhausen but I beleive I seen these types of threads before :)

A Landcruiser 'Stabdard' (barn doors) is the go and you may get one with a winch and some other gear.

Easy to clean out and as tough as.

Do you really need a station wagon??
If solely for touring/camping, then a traytop with canopy is a more practical solution - superb access to everything - and very easy to live out of.
If you like LandCruisers, then post-1999 HZJ79 is the better model. If you had an extra $10k, you could get factory TD.
If you like Patrols, then 4.2TD traytop.
Then theres the 4 cylinder diesels - lose a little bit in Payload, and you won't get a rigid front end.

Go and try a 3.2 Diesel Pajero have heaps of power and good economy plus reliability. Would go diesel and auto in Pajero. Probarly the best idea is to ask some owners.Have never had cruiser or patrol so wont comment but every 3.2 Diesel owner i have talked to is very impressed.

Hi Stephen.I have a 2000. petrol,GXL Landcruiser, with leather front seats,driver/passenger air bags, abs, cruise control, roof racks, bull bar,winch,front/rear diff locks, suspension lift, cooper stt tyres, it came with a full service history,1 owner,[I checked],compared to my GQ,it is simply a pleasure to drive/ride in for a long period of time ! Our last trip was 7000 kms in 17 days, nobody complained about having a sore bum because they were sitting to long, however,in the GQ it was the opposite. Now don't get me wrong,my GQ is hands down the toughest 4x4 I have ever owned, but my Landcruiser is far more comfortable for touring. I have had my cruiser 12mnths.It cost me 34000 as is.And has never let me down.Hope this helps...

I'll bowl you a reverse swinging delivery.

The Hyundai Terracan is a value option. You can pick up a 2004 V6, with three years of factory warranty still on it for mid 20's. Bloody lot of car for not a lot of money.

I've had mine since June 2004. Ironman suspension and tyres have made it a very competent off road vehicle. It surprises many.

Plenty of poke, good build quality, great tow vehicle, lots of comforts. I bloody love it. Uses a bit of juice, but what V6 doesn't? Still, at the saving, the cost of juice is secondary.

If you're keen on a diesel, it came out in late 2004 or early 2005 with a wonderful 2.9 CRDi engine. Trouble is, they're so good, you will struggle to find one on the S/H market. If you can stretch to high 30's you'll get a new CRDi.
