Philips Vision Plus 50 globes - expected life?

I fitted a pair of Philips Vision Plus 50 globes to the Pajero a little over 12 months ago - one of them burnt out the low-beam element during the week. Not very impressed with a car headlight bulb that only lasted 12 months. As luck would have it I had kept the original bulbs in the old Philips packaging in the car as spares (thought I would never use them but never knew!), so I had an OEM replacement handy.

Has anyone else had short lives out of these globes, or did I just have a dud?

I had the plus 50's (Hella) fitted to the dunnydoor for over 12m before I sold it with no problems. And the wife's car has had the phillips plus 50's for over 2 years without a problem.

Maybe the vibration inherent with off road use kills them a little quicker?

Can't help with your question but what did you think of their performance? Do they make a significant improvement? (when still working)

Yes they do make a differnce. The light is whiter, brighter, and theres more of it. Gee sounds like a laundry powder add :) Suposed to add another 25m to your field of vision.

For around $25 a pair, Its not a huge outlay.

There are other versions out there, with more yellow in the mix to give better rain/fog/mist penetration.

There are other causes.

Have you upgraded the wiring of your vehicle? Hitting globes with the full 14.3 volts can shorten their life.

Also the glass part of halogen globes should not be touched by human hands.

Otherwise, it sounds like bad luck.

No, definitely didn't leave any oil on the bulb from fingers etc - tried not to handle the glass and I wiped it down before clipping it in place.

Running the factory wiring loom to the headlights, no upgrade.

Corrugations may definitely have played a role - but it's only been short sections on tracks in Victoria, no major trips anywhere. Still been typical rough shake-the-bejesus types though, they've certainly added a few rattles to the vehicle, so if they're prone to corrugation damage, it could be it.

When I put them in 12 months ago, I thought there was a huge difference - but now that I've refitted one of the original Mitsubishi globes, I can't pick them apart when looking at the lights or the beam they cast! It's as if the remaining globe has lost some of it's effectiveness, which I've not heard of in a bulb before.

Honestly not sure if I'm going to fork out for another pair, will probably just refit the other original globe if the other goes.

That seems to be a little short ..
Mine have been in for 2 years and I do a lot of night driving. ( 55/60 watt )
In the big picture, a few $$$ is a small price to pay for good quality ( and bright ) globes..
When I had my Commodore I ran 4 Phillips long life globes, ( 110/90 watt ) . Had a relay fitted to give them 12 v, constant, and was prepared to change them 12 monthly if they dulled..
I recon that it was better to see the roo's, and wombats, and koalas, than hit them

It really is cheap insurance
Cheers

My H4 globes seem to blow every 6 months (15,000kms - 20,000kms), having said that I have my lights on every time I get into the car day or night.

He H3's and H7's (both highbeams) I have have never blown since I put them on two years ago.
