Hi All,
The other day there I had a very close call. Was joining a main road doing about 100 Km/h and was too busy looking in my right hand mirror to notice the traffic in front was almost at a stand still. Anyway I pushed that sucker of a brake pedal right into the shag pile. I was always concerned that the patrols brakes were spongy, but to my astonishment they almost put me through the windscreen, they worked fantastically. So in an emergency they work just fine, never noticed if the ABS came on as I had bleep myself by then. Totally my fault but I’m glad of the outcome.

A Quote I read a while back about GU brakes said something similar, it went something like 'while the brakes feel spongey and inadequate, just keep pushing them towards the floor and the rig pulls up surprisingly quickly"
Couple of weeks ago I locked them up when a roo decided to end it all (no ABS). It was the first really hard braking I have done in the car (bout 4 years). I was pleasently surprised by the way it handled in the situation.
Cheers Andrew

I have had the same experience with GU brakes. I do also have ABS but a word of warning on slippery
unsealed road, the ABS will hinder braking to the point of being dangerous as I have found out in the
Snowy Mountains. I now pull the ABS fuse on such roads to prevent the ring piece twiching as the last time was too close for comfort.
I have an auto and have had to replace all brake pads at 95000KM.

I remember that being a point of contention when ABS was first being introduced, as locking the
wheels allows the tyres to break thru the gravel/crust and ABS stops that effect.

Hmmm, the GU I used to drive for work didn't have ABS and it was DANGEROUS in the wet IMHO. Just slip and slide all over the place if you went a little past the threshold.

Hello members,
Have a 2002 GU coilcab (No ABS) and if you keep your heel on the floor and use your toes do the braking these big beasts pull up in a very surprisingly short distance.
The tendency in an emergency is to push the pedal through the floor..... WRONG!
Press gently, look in the direction you wish to go to avoid obstacle and steer that way while maintaining gentle brake pedal pressure. Lock the brakes up and you have no steering at all........ Very expensive and possibly painful??

Hadn't seen you post in a while scottcamp, so good to know that Patrol has you surviving. I think you do your 4bying in a different environment to us, so how about doing some photos in a album for us? They would be totally different to what we see. Good to see you know where we are too by the way!

Hi John R,
Yes its been a while, just got bogged down with work. I have made a decision to make more time for the things i enjoy so will be around more often.
I would love to post some pictures but i am not too good with computers, how do i do it?
In reply to some of the above posts, it is now illegal to sell a new car in Europe without ABS so we have no option.

Mate, I use the free www.photobucket.com/ to hold photos. You can then use their tag line to provide the address to the particular photo you want to show. It works 90% of the time for me, so occasional failure is excused. I am sure you can get some Top Gear type shots of a Patrol at Scotland's highest peak or something ;-)
