can anyone recommend a set of fluids for this vehicle? I've been told a few different things here and there and thought I'd ask the forum.

I have just bought it and am going to change the transfer case, diffs, gearbox and of course engine oil in it and want to get it all right before proceeding.

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks

I have a 94 Troopy , I just use the shell Diesel oil usually but last oil change [10,000] I used bleep s bleep s.com.au/" target="EOF" class="lbg">www. bleep s.com.au/ , and I always add Wynns ,or Nulon friction proof to the engine and it is also in the 2 diffs and gearbox/transfer case, most of the accessories places have the little tubes which is 1 for each diff and transfer/gearbox, My engine now has 628,000klm/

Engine Oil: any 15W40 diesel engine oil currently available will be fine. I'm currently using Gulf Western (CI-4) - cost me $66 for 20litres from the truck shop.
Gearbox and Transfer: Castrol VMX-M and Valvoline Duragear 75/85 get over the cold shift problems.
Front and Rear diffs: I use any LS90 oil in both - Valvoline or F U C H S lately. LS90 is fine in a front diff even though its not limited slip.
Brake Fluid: Toyota tell you to only use DOT3 which is pretty much unobtainable from the shops. I get the Toyota stuff which costs the same anyway.
Coolant: I only use the Toyota Red because thats what came with the vehicle, and I avoid miximg coolants and the cost of the genuine stuff is fine.

Husky,

I recently updated my old Disco to a 105 series Toyota with the 1HZ and have researched oils quite a lot and came up with a few guidelines. Take them as you may. This information comes from the archives of various oil forums and the LCOOL Yahoo group.

Engine Oil: The 1HZ is a japanese diesel and as such, you should use an oil specified for japanese diesels. Most of the 15W40 oils available such as Castrol RX super, Turbomax, Shell Rimula X etc etc are not specifically specced for these type of diesels. The only ones I personally know of are Castrol J-Max and Caltex CXJ, which is what I now use.
Front Diff: Any good quality diff oil 80/90 will suffice.
Manual Transmission: I use Castrol VMX-M 75/85 (from memory) apparently helps with cold shifting and 'notchy' 2nd gear.
Rear LSD: Any good 90 oli specced for LSD...ie Castrol LSX
Transfer Case: Castrol Multitrax 75/90.
Brake Fluid: Ensure you only use Dot 3 as Dot 4 will stuff the seals in the brake system apparently.

This list is not exhaustive by any means, but is what I use and can source relatively easily and cheaply.

Hope this helps,

Cheers,

Mark

Hi Mark,
I am always a bit puzzled by the engine oil "japanese diesel" thing, and wonder whether it's an internet myth.

Reason I say so is:
#1 Caltex do not recommend CXJ - they recommend Delo400.
#2 Castrol do not recommend J-max - they recommend six others - including Magnatec, GTX3, CRF, Agripowerplus, GTX and RX super
#3 Toyota recommend any oil greater than CE specs from memory - this is an API spec - American Petrol Institute - not a Japanese spec.

Given that the 1Hz is an old engine, and unbreakable if you service it, I'd suggest that buying more expensive Jap spec oils will do no harm, but might be a waste of money.

Also, the LS90 oil is above the specs required for the front diff. So most workshops use it in both diffs, given it costs the same, and simplifies the oil changes

Multitrax is the Gear oil recommended by Castrol for the gearbox and transfer - I used it once and found it unusable because of the cold shift problems, so I use the VMX-M or Valvoline equivalent in both.

Cheers
phil

Phil,

As with any of these bits of advice gleaned from the internet, you may be right, but much of the information I read had me fairly convinced, (gullable perhaps??) and given the price of these oils isn't dissimilar to those I would otherwise use, I'm going to stick with it.....but will continue to keep my ear to the ground, of course.

Also, I hear what you say about the Multitrax, but I haven't used it in the gearbox, just the t'case. Perhaps when the Multi runs out, I may swap over to the VMX-M in both....likewise the LSX90 for the front diff...I had heard this before also.

If you would like me to send you a copy of the info I have on this 'Japanese Oil' stuff...PM me off line on markeaust at optusnet dot com dot au...

Cheers and thanks for the info...

Mark
