If the book says 140, then 85w-140 will do nicely,IMO...
I'm using Castrol LSX 85w-140 in
mine (same model as yours), and have done since I purchased the vehicle new... No problems to report...

Hi dj
I have been using LS85/140 from here www.gulfwestern.com.au/
Have been for years and no dramas.
I service their own vehicles and they put their own oil in them so must be alright.
The only thing is the web site states it is only available in 205 and 20 litre drums but I buy it in 1 litre packs as
well.
Hope this helps

I used to use a BP LS140, but no longer available in the quantities I required (a 200 litre drum was a bit much for my needs).
I rang Nissan in Melb, and they assured me that Castrol LSX 85W/140 or equiv was fine for the rear diff.

Prefer Sythetic Oils here djpatrol, always after the extra horsy.
Used to use
Mobil 1 SHC 80w-140ID , this has been known
to improve operation and smoothness of diff / LSD combination.
After fitting rear locker I can now use one common oil
in transfer, gearbox and both diffs

Hi djpatrol
The Nissan LSD oil specification is SAE 140 oil PLUS their LSD additive for a very good reason, i.e. nothing else will do.
I have used a multi grade LSD gear oil in my GU Patrol with bad results. I started to get what seemed like a very minor clutch shudder (in an automatic?) when starting slowly from a standstill and turning on full lock.
Asked around at my local 4wd club and was told very clearly to use 140 LSD oil only, as specified by Nissan.
The Nissan oil and additive is available from your dealer.
The major oil companies also supply a huge range of oils, check out their web sites on Google for 140 LSD gear oil.
I replaced my LSD oil with Penrite Limslip Gear Oil SAE 140 API GL5/6 Heavy Duty plus the Penrite LSD additive. The "clutch" shudder disappeared immediately. I emailed Penrite at penrite@penrite.com.au to find my local agent.
Hope this helps
regards
phil

Nissan prices are good for their oils/coolants etc
We own 5 Nissan vehicles - their 7.5W30 Engine Oil cost me $25 for 5 litres last week, and the Coolant was $43 for 5litres, but they take pity on me and only charge me trade.

Hi djpatrol
My 2nd response after searching the ExploreOz archives.
See Post ID 9625 January 09 2004 from Jimmy and the replies and follow ups which confirm my experience with the "clutch?" type shudder because of the incorrect grade or contaminated LSD oil.
regards
Phil

I have also used the Penrite oil in my Patrol ,
http://www.penrite.com.au/files/NFTWH519LK/COMPETITION%20DIFF%20OIL.pdf Penrite also do a new SIN 140 . The competition oil has the lsd addative in it and the diff works real good, like a locker but no judder.
