I picked up a Redarc today and reading the instructions it says it "should' be mounted on a horizontal surface. It'd be easier for me to mount it on a vertical surface. Does anyone have theirs like this?
Also, how hot do they get?

mines mounted horizontal, easier as that is where the bolt holes are and it stands vertical as it came in the box. I can only speculate as to why it states that it must be mounted on a horizontal plane, maybe something to do with the circuitry or internals?? Dunno. Perhaps you could make a bracket, L shaped that bolts onto your vertical plane, but allows the redarc to be mounted on a horizontal plane? Just a thought.
As for how hot,
mine gets warm, and rightly so with all that currenty stuff that flows through it. They dont get "argh I cant feel my fingers" hot, but
mine gets "hmmmm, that is warm and should let go now" hot.
I have had no problems at all with
mine, Its great, easy to fit and wire, and then forget about it.
cheers
Mike

Ours has always been mounted on a vertical surface in the Pajero and never had a problem, so far. It's been like that for 2 years now hope this helps.

Ditto uncle,
mine is vertical in the Patrol and has been since March last year without any problems.

This is how
mine is mounted, made a bracket out of scrap beaten into shape and rivetted to the inner guard. It has been there two years and no problems so far. As for heat Redarc say
"QUESTION: My smart start gets very hot when operating. Is this normal?
ANSWER: Yes, it is normal for these products to run hot. A high current solenoid requires high power on the coil to ensure a good contact. This
results in heat dissipated in the coil body."

When cables heat up, they are said to be too thin/small and cause loss of power??

I prefer circuit boards to be horizontal. I have a theory (anecdotal) that components vibrate more if the board is vertical. I can only back it up with a couple of odd experiences where stuff failed when mounted vertical.

The circuit board is potted so makes no difference.

I fitted
mine myself but didn't read the bit about horizontal, so
mine is vertical.
Has done 10,000k with the trailer on and the trailer battery connected via Anderson plugs, and no problems. The 10,000 was to
Cape York and back, so there was plenty of vibration for the Redarc to cope with!
Mental note - make an angle bracket and re-position it to vertical one rainy day....

The Redarc is a solenoid and has a moving plunger. Friction and gravity will case wear in a vertical mount position. The resulting filings and rough edges can cause the Redarc to bind or not operate freely.
Regards Derek.

Because it's a basic solenoid in operation, with a fancy name of course. The manufacturer (Redarc) tells you to install the product that way for the reasons Derek has stated, :-(
An electronic isolator they can be mounted anywhere, as they don't have the heavy solenoid moving inside them using their own
battery power just to remain open...

Thanks for all the replies fellas. I installed it this arvy on a vertical surface in the engine bay close to the battery. It seems to be operating
well so far. When I get some more time I will probably work out a bracket to mount it on a horizontal surface.
