At last Ford has unveiled the new Defender, getting tons of press in the UK. Have a look and see what you think. I think it is a massive step in the right direction. Unfortunately they have also confirmed that this model will run until 2010 and that will be the end of the Defender as we know it, possibly forever. Will be tempted to buy one of the last models in 2010, as the patrol will be paid off by then :-)

No way, an absolute classic shape, probably the most recognisable 4x4 in the world.

There was a post earlier this month on it also....

No doubt the usual (firendly) banter will filter through shortly, but it is worth reflecting that fifty years on the Landy is still going strong; that's a great production record!

Go the Landy.........................

Its just a shame that it will come to an end in a few years. You will notice the side seats are gone, that is due to the crap European laws interfering again. The reason it will not stay in production is again because of Europe, it will not pass the new crash test standards.

What do you think of the new dash? I like it.

You know, 95% of all Landrovers made are still on the road....5% made it back home.

It appears to be an awkward and ungainly blend of an old school simple and rugged 4x4 mated with ultra high tech, computerised componentry.

What's the point? Either go a simple, low tech, owner servicable N/A diesel in a 'hose out' configuration - OR - an ultra modern, high tech 4x4 with all the whistles and bells. In this guise I suggest it would do neither job particularly well and the trade off for all the electronics is hardly worth it. A 1HZ Toyota motor is comparable from the figures and I certainly know which one I'd trust to drive anywhere remote or 'extreme'.

Is it just me, or does this 'workhorse' miss the entire point of a having a 'bare bones' 4x4?

I'll take the Troopy thanks.

Mate blame the european market!!.Landrover can no longer compete with the defender in its present stage. the td5 bmw motor won't even stack up agains't there tough emisson laws. electronics will be the issue every one is going to have to come to grips with from now on in. Don't get to cocky with toyo, electronics have crept into the later models and will only get worse.

Cheers Axle.

Isn't the current equivalent cruiser about the same age and if you discount the minor change in the body of the current workhorse Cruiser, it goes back to the 50s. So what is your point Truckster?

hi Truckster you of course know about AWD FUL TIME AWD etc this is designed to make all wheels work at the same time but what you dont think of is the Eng Design that goes in to AWD the diff can be lighter and smaller so when you take out the front drive and put front locking hubs you put more wear and tare on the rear diff at a much lower ks than with awd the savings you make in fuel econmy is not worth the lost handling, the extra wear on the rear diff and axles

We could approach this in true "Top Gear" fashion. Ladies and Gentlemen, here we have the new Defender and there we have the old defender and as you can see the design department has been very lazy because you could be excused for not seeing the difference. The engineering and marketing departments have taken a leaf out of the design department book and have done nothing. BUT the accounting department has been busy - this new model that looks like the old one, except for the minor change to the wiper button, will cost you more.

Kind regards

Aaahhh, some of the responses were predictable......there is something comforting in that.

But as they say in the classics, as long as they are talking about you, who cares what they say......

As much as i like the landys, this 2.4l diesel from ford may well be a disaster!.

From what i've read and heard its the transit motor, and the first of the bunch were about as good as the zd30 nissans, so i would surely hope there not just making a quickmake over till the complete new design arrives.

cheers Axle.
