Hi all, about to replace the battery in the old girl had a good run out of it just over 6 years, am now wondering wether to get a sealed battery or just go for the same type again with unsrewable caps on top, only thing I have found is a fair bit of damage under battery (paint flaked off) due to battery acid spilt out when on rough roads etc. Is there any main advantages or disadvantages between the two other than the already mentioned battery acid. Have looked at a few can get a 760 ccp for $120 usually $220 sealed type, just has the little window in the top, BLUE for fully charged. BLACK needs charging, CLEAR dead battery. This is for the main starting battery but also gets used for fridge etc. Regards Steve M

Hi Stephen

If you have had 6 good years of use with your current setup
I'd be inclined to stick with it , unless your planning
changes like winch etc.

Your 1989 Hilux would have had its charging system designed
before the widespread adoption of sealed and AGM batteries
and may not charge at optimum voltage.

Something to check before a change to a new type.

Hi there Robin (not related are we), yes had a good run out of old battery but it has done some damage to the paint under the battery tray due to the acid coming out on rough roads etc and there is a bit of surface rust where the paint has come away so decided to go with the sealed type so I dont have any more damage. Rang auto elec today after your reply and checked out ok to use either type of battery. Thankyou Regards Steve Miller

We couldn't possibly be related Stephen as you drive a Toyota and I drive a Nissan.

The New MRV70 Allrounder is the best value for money I have seen in a while.

Next step will be an AGM

Hi there Derek, I take it from your reply the MRV70 isnt as good as the AGM, is there much price differance, what is the cranking capacity on the MRV70, remembering Iv only got a 2.8 D but will be used for fridge. Regards Steve M

Well...

Both are very good batteries.

The MRV is very close to a AGM.

$100-00 between them.

The MRV70 has 105 amp hours and 760 cca

AGM is the only way to go.

On the recent Cape York trip, both my travelling companions had problems with their wet cell batteries, one with the main starting battery, a "normal" one which splashed acid out of the top on the corrugations and went flat but seems to have recovered with a charge, the other car's was a deep cycle auxiliary wet battery, it splashed acid out of the top and exposed the plates in one cell and could no longer raise a spark when dead shorted!

My AGM (100ah, 1000cca) ran my fridge for 4 days at Glasshouse Mountains and had no problems starting the car, zero acid splash, no problems with the corrugations.

I paid $76.00 for it on E-Bay plus $30 to ship to Melb and it was a bargain!

HI there Gerhardp1, are these available at most battery outlets or are they only sold at certain places, I am purchasing one tomorrow so will try and get that brand if possible ?? Sound like a good powerful battery which is what I'm after, dont have winch etc so as said will be for starting and running fridge only. Regards Steve M
