Hey dudes and dudettes. A good mate of mine was looking at a 1999 TD Jackaroo for his son today, and he noted that after a while, it was smokey at idle.

It seemed to be fine while driving, and fine when idling for a short while, but if left to idle it would start to smoke. It has 140,000 k on the clock.

Any ideas.

Cheers,

Muzz

Make sure it has had the injector recall attended to, and make sure it 's running suitable oil - search the forum for details of well known issues that have been addressed by GMH.

Worn valve stem oil seals are a common sign of what you described. Idle for a minute or two, starts getting smokey when you take off it blows more smoke for a little while then clears as you keep driving.

Muzz, tell your mate to stay clear of the 4JX1 3.0 TDI Jackaroo, aspecially the early ones, along with the injecter problems there are a few other issues as well.

They are a good car but if they have the recorded issues they are a nightmare, stick with the petrol Jack.

I'll second that, and that's coming from a TD Jack owner with relatively few problems. Just check the forums and you'll see why. Oops, just added to the Jacks depreciation again!
