Thanks in advance to all who offer advice !

I am in need of upgrading the tyres on my new (to me) 1999 Prado (Snowy - Stock standard, with 16" Alloys). Currently has 265/70/16 Grand Treks and Nankang (?) tyres.

I do week-end 4wding only, mostly sand and bush tracks (however a few challenging bits thrown in for good measure), so the current road only tyres need to go, once they have worn a bit further. Looking for AT tyres.

However, $$ are a bit tight, and so SWMBO has limited the budget. I cannot afford the top of the range tyres, so have lowered my sights a little. I was looking at Pirrelli Scorpion AT's or Maxxis MA751 both of which are $180 @ Bob Jane.

Any thoughts on these tyres or others with in the less than $200 bracket???

Sorry for bringing up tyres again, but promise not to ask about pressure!!

Thanks

RD

Other tyres under $200.00 ea which are AT.
Most of these people also make muddies of various specs.

Kumho AT, Simex ATX300, Hankook, Triangle (Chinese as well), Silverstone, Sumitomo.
Tyres4u - GT radial (savero range), Eldorado (might be over $200.00 now as more people are buying them.) Look them up on their web site.
Toyo seem to have gone a little above $200.00 these days.

With my 235/85/16, prices for above vary from $145.00 to $200.00.
Some will say you get what you pay for, but some of these tyres are not too bad and may beat others on a price/quality consideration.
I remember when coopers and BFG used to be reasonably cheap 20 years ago, but now they have a name, prices seem to have gone up, while my wages have not to match :o).

Good luck. You are going to get a lot of ansers on this one, with a lot of different advice.

I just put Cooper AT/Rs on my Prado - superb on and off road... I would hazard a guess and say the expected long life would outweigh the extra $$ to purchase? I previously had Grandtreks and also have a second set of rims with Goodyear Wrangler AT/R's but I felt these were a bit suss on-road (very squirmy).

I have been running Simex ATs for 40,000k and are half worn, and paid $145.00 ea for them. Wheel alignment every 20,000, so will cost $175.00 per tyre for 80,000k.

Tried cooper ATs early in the piece and only got 55,000k out of them. Went through two sets since coopers replaced them at a pro rata cost because they didn't reach the guaranteed milage. But when I cost in the 10,000 service at $45.00 a time, and the fact that the prorata replacement cost is worked on full retail price, not so cheap.
Paid $220.00 ea for the coopers first off, then part of the $240.00 RRP prorata. So cost me $276.25 per tyre for 55,000k, or $358.75 for 80,000k. Most other tyres I have tried have got around the 50,000 to 60,000k. Coopers, bridgestones, Firestone, Toyo, so I seem consistent in driving style.

Can not see the coopers being worth twice the cost per kilometre for me. :o)
Personal opinion I know, hope you get good milage and traction out of your coopers. :-) They just don't seem to suit me.
Will need to wait and see how the simex go when low tread and wet bitumen. I run all tyres right down to the wear bars.

Pirelli Scorpion AT seems very good value at that price. Bob Jane quoted me $275 for 265/70R16s. The Scorpion topped the Austn 4WD Monthly AT test late 2005 "by a country mile".

Scorpion AT is being replaced by ATR.
