People,
my truck has developed a noise in the front of the engine and would like to hear from anyone that has had a similar experience. I am convinced the noise is a tensioner or pulley, this assumption come from much investigation. I have had the cruiser into ARB, $1000, and a local mechanic, $3444.00 neither of which has a clue. The later service just returned the vehicle and said calmly, " We did some other work but your noise is still there". These guys can hear it but are also unable to identify. The last serivce replaced the timing belt and tensioner, plus many other things. They feel it may be the power steering pump, but I am not convinced. It is a very metalic sound which is mostly evident at idle and under engine breaking. It is definately not within the engine, it is something on the front. I have had one guy say there is a spring loaded tensioner/idler between the crankshaft and injuection pump drive that can rattle.
Any ideas ?????

I had the same noise in my 80 series L/C It turned out to be the steering pump. Replaced it with a reconditioned pump, problem fixed

Try the crankshaft harmonic dampener pulley if it has one. We went thru a similar exercse on my son's Commodore, replacing
water pump and alternator (both of which had done over 300,000 k's, but the noise remained.
Ended up being the harmonic balancer.
And glad to hear your timing belt has been done- hope they also replaced idler pulleys etc.
Mates 100 series broke a belt prematurely and it has cost him a fortune- Toyota didn't want to know him. I HATE rubber timing belts- also lost our faithful old diesel Gemini last year due to one of these breaking before it was due for replacement.
Good luck, cheers

Flash,
they certainly replaced the timing belt and the Hydraulic Tensioner.........but I don't think they have done any idler pulleys. Any idea how many there are???
I need to get a manual don't I :-(

Sorry, no.
Have worked on Fords, Patrols, Comodores etc but never a 100 series donk- other than replacing an alternator. Never looked at the rest of the engine.
With the son's Commodore, the rubber on the Harmonic Balancer pulley had gone "soft", yet it looked OK. New Harmonic balancer and wow- noise all gone!

Toytruck,
You said you ran engine with ALL belts removed? That would rule out all external components, idlers, power steering etc.
So the noise must be within the engine?
I like the comment Flash put up and would definitely be looking in that area.
A long shot, electric cooling fan??

Nighjar,
He said "with all AC belts removed". NOT "all belts removed".
So now he should try it with all external belts removed. It won't do any harm to run it for a few minutes with no
water pump or fan. Just don't run it for more than say 3 minutes from a cold start.
How's the prospetcing and what dya reckon of this ISU unit? I know you're a leaseholdeer as I WAS, so I reckon you'd approve.

Bilbo,
Sorry I read it as,
"I have run the engine with all A/C belts etc disconnected and the noise is still there............. "
Seeing the "etc" I assumed Toytruck had removed "all" belts. Anyway I'm sure TT can verify this and if he hasn't removed "all" belts, he should and an idler bearing will probably be the problem.
Maybe an upgrade to the ever reliable TD42 Nissan will have his problem solved.

Gents,
all comments appreciated:-) whe I say all external belts i mean all belts with the exception of the cam belt..........wouldn't like to run it without this one:-( Hence my focus aiming at the one idler that nowimnumberone mentioned.
As for the nice comments WRT upgrading to another make................."always been a cruiser man", though have to admit, my other toytruck, HJ60 with over 600,000k and still going strong, the 100 seems to be a lot softer in a lot of ways.
Still a cruiser man though:-)

My turn to have go Mr Toy.
I have a 1HZ Troopy which has had some attention to power steering pump for the wrong reason, but we won't go into that.
Back to the point - my Troopy is a 1997 (last run of 75 series) and the power steering pump fits into engine/timing case area from rear to front on the passenger side and is a direct spline driven arrangement.
So with the belts off and engine going, that mother of a Pwr steering pump is still rotating.
There is a good possibility you may have the same setup.
Try removing all the exterior belts, jack the front end up, start it up and give the steering wheel a work out from side to side and see if there is any difference.
Might even try it cold then hot. Bit of mucking around removing and fitting belts but a whole lot better that $3,000 - $4,000 thats its cost so far looking for the noise source.
Have a good one.

been a while... hope you've gotten somewhere with this problem.....
With faulty harmonic balancers, they can make a noise with the fan belt attached but sometimes then the noise will stop when fan belt is removed- it's all to do with tension on the harmonic balancer pulley.
This is what happened with the son's Commodore which "lead us up the garden path" so to speak.
Cheers

Flash,
appreciate the comments. Have played alittle more and beleive its somewhere in the power steering pump drive gear. An earlier post suggested jacking her up and loading the power steering to see if the noise altered but the prob is that this does not alter the load on the actual drive gear at the front of the 1HZ. Having said that, I took her up a dry creek bed yesterday, over some fairly severe rocks and it really agravated the noise, has to be steering somewhere. I think my only option is to spend more money, get the pump etc overhauled and see if that does the trick. I am confident that the harmonic is OK.................I think.
