Yesterday I was talking to the local Nissan dealer and he reckons that the 4.2 l is to be phased out late next year or early 2008 and replaced by a 3.9L common rail injected ( what ever that means ) 6 cyl TD reported to be producing almost power and torque as the 4.8 petrol.

Has anyone else heard any thing along these lines

Hi Patto,

I heard that it was supposed to be a 3.5L, based on the new 2.5L Navara diesel. But then again, I wouldn't believe anything a car salesman told me!

Cheers

Hi Captain

You may be right as he did mention something about the new Navara D40 when talking about the common rail injection

Cheers

and the 4.2TD is gone by end of 2006, doesn't meet new emission regs so the new engine "should" be here by end of 2006 / early 2007.

Patto,
That is very pleasant music to the ears that a new model is approaching although not happy about giving up the tried, proven and ever reliable 4.2 Turbo.
However if this talk is true about the extra grunt out of the 3.9L that would ease the pain.
My current 4.2 Turbo upgrade + 3" exhaust system made my little truck really get up and go.
No doubt one of the fuel injection outlets will offer the turbo upgrade on this engine if it eventuates.
Will do a little delving at our local Nissan dealer and see what info I can get.
Cheers

Patto, Peter & Others.

When I am in 'normal' mode our daily driver is a 05 2.5L JEEP Common Rail Diesel (CRD).

The CRD means there is only one High preseure outlet from the pump which enters a 'common delivery rail' across the top/side of the cylinders.

The injector system is electronic same as the pump and controlled by one or more computer management systems.

The accelerator/throttle as you now know it is usually 'fly by wire' .

Now when everything is working as designed - Maaaaaaaaaaaaaate! it/they perform like a greyhound with a dab of turps on his date.

However, any leetle hiccup with that electronic management system , then you are in for the time of your life.

Having said that, I am well aware that Nissan designs, produces and prices fantastic, reliable machines which never have a warranty problem and if by some misfortune they do, then they will immediately remedy the situation without loss or pain or suffering to the owner.

Look forward to seeing this 'thing of beauty'

Also look forward to Roachie selling Annette and the kids off to be able to buy one. (LOL)

You've gotta be joking!!!! I've got this beast of mine up to spec now....can blow off a Mazzaratti over the standing quarter mile, so going to some lame "Common Rail" rubbish is simply not an option.......

Common: something I would never call myself or anything I have anything to do with.

Rail: an slow, antiquated mode of transport with lots of time-consuming breakdowns.

No thanks.

Roachie ;-)))

You're a funny man Mr Lucy !!

I'm with Roachie, my old 4.2 will be with me for many a year to come now. Especially considering the gearbox gets redone tomorrow along with a new clutch and 3.7 crawler gears going in the transfer case should mean another lifetime of hassle free motoring LOL (if only). I know, I know, could have opted for the 2.7 ratio but I figure why do some things in halves. Extra low for safety when towing the van off-road, should mean more control???

Cheers Trevor.

Trevor,
I find the 2.8 low range is more than low enough for the sort of work I do. I reckon the 3.7 would only be needed by the blokes with huge tyres and who are rock-crawling.
Cheers mate

Oi! Trev

Are you using 3.7 in an effort to keep the thing cool. (sorry just couldn't help myself)

Does the intercooler help.

And as for you Roachie - you have no idea whatsoever of the concept or understanding of the terminology

'up to spec or spec'd up'

Just accept that you will be working for the rest of your life to get that miserable excuse of a thing that you drive spec'd up to the standard of at least a 'Jerrycan '.

Albiet a RF saturated, brain frying 'Jerrycan' at that.

toyots has almose confirmed (well everyone seems to have the same onfo about) a new 4.4 litre v8 twinturbo commen rail diesel engine

i would just think nissian would just bring out something similar?

i remember reading that over in the us that nissan plans to bring out a diesel version of there titan (there version of a navara), & for there larger SUVs, i couldn't Imagine nissan making 2 different diesel engines , but would most likely go for 1 size fits all policy

but what ever motor they do bring out lets hope is isn't made by the makers of the 3.0

What happened to the the last rumours....

5.7 V8 Diesel non turbo also in petrol
4.8 turbo diesel?
4.5 turbo diesel
2.8 turbo diesel 4cyl again

and I thought they were gettin rid of it by mid 2007 but once agian its that time of yr.

You are the quintessential optimist of the Nissan driving/owning brigade Truckster.

Such hope, enthusiasm, joy, laughter, wit, banter is rarely experienced from one of the aforementioned 'brigade' members.

Never believe a car salesman, he will still tell ya the 3.0 L is BETTER than the old 4.2 and he only wants to sell you a 3.0L over a 4.2L .

Can someone let me know if I have got this correct?
Toyota and Nissan are both rumoured to be bringing out new models of their flagship model "SUV" (hate that term)
Toyota is going up to a 4.4 litre V8 diesel
Nissan is going down to a 4 cylinder diesel across the board

Given that the ZD30 has worse fuel economy and less power than the 1HD-FTE, I wonder which way the sales figures will go? Will the patrols 30 something% market share go up or down?

Boy this will be interesting!!!
