Hi all

I have a cavalier off-road Camper and i am wanting to add a 12 volt system to it.

I priced then at the cavalier dealer and it is over the top in price.

What i would like to know is, what do i need to do a system like this and be able to charge it from the 4by.

As you can probably tell i have no idea what so ever and also no idea where to start, i just want to be able to run lights and other 12 volt appliances and to have it all neat and tidy.

Yep i am in need of help.

Thanks in advance.

Kev

A very effective way is to buy from "Ashdowns" auto electrical supplies a smat relay, about $100 each then fit it under the bonnet with cable to a 30 amp anderson plug at the back of you 4by and another on the trailer with a battery. If is is jsut lights you wan tot run then use a cheap ordinary car battery (suggest the same physical size as the car so you have a spare) but if you want to run a fridge then a larger deep cycle battery is recommended. The battery can ber placed on the drawbar with suitable box (about $20 at suoercheap). All up about $200 excluding the battey.

Hi Kevin

You need a heavy controller like the Redarc or Sidewinder and ABR systems.

We have kits that include the whole shooting match for around $200.00 (Excl battery)

Let us know what you need to run and for how long. Do you have Smart Chargers, inverters and solar. 3 way or 2 way fridge etc.

Regards Derek.

Hi Kevin, Go and have a chat to the people at The 12 volt Shop. There is one somewhere in the region of the Abernethy/Leach Highway junction (I think, check the telephone directory to be sure). I am a reasonable handyman but know absoloootly nothing about electricity of either kind but they were able to talk me through what I needed to install dual batteries and two sockets in the back of my vehicle and sell me the parts I needed. (Plus a wiring diagram on the back of an envelope - no charge). As I had been elsewhere prior to reaching them I knew the price for the main bit (The relay thingy) was OK and the other bits were cheap enough not to worry about. I bought the deep cycle battery elsewhere as I wanted to check further on prices.

I also have a Cavalier (love it) and will be putting in a 12 volt system once my wife's list of other jobs reduces enough for me to have time to do the things I want to do. (Best guess - about the Summer of 2012)
