My good friend has a dash light problem, the alternator light and sub
tank light have both lit up. He has a 2001 gu 3.0 td patrol. There appears to be no obvious problem with the alternator and it has a new battery fitted. I seem to recall some post similar to this with a remedy. Anybody got ideas, thanks Eric.

Eric
I had same sort of problem
It was a broken wire in the plug that went into the alternator, but the plastic outer was still ok so it took a bit to find. I hope that this helps.

Hi Eric,
Broken wire in the plug going into the alternator is a common problem, as earlier reply states the outside insulation is fine but the wire inside is broken, it is the wire that tells the regulator what state of charge the battery is in,
mine cost me $600.00 as I cooked 2 batteries and the alternator before we found out what was wrong.

If that doesn't work, try just disconnecting the battery to allow the leccy module/s to reset themselves. Leave it disconnected for a few minutes. That is what usually works if it's just the sub-
tank light that's lit-up. The cause is usually because of poor earthing if cruise control or maybe a leccy brake controller has been added etc. It pays to ensure that there is additional earth cable from the chassis to the body &/or the engine.
