Hi, Well the official advice from the Toyota dealer is that mu 1999 3.0L Hilux ute is terminal and needs a rebuild or new motor. The problem is that i have all sorts of prices given to me. ($9,000 new from toyota plus my bits and labour total $13000) - ($4400 second hand with six months warranty) - (rebuilding ?? dont know yet but im guessing somewhere in between??). I am seeking advice what to do and where might be a good place to go to get one and what should i pay for it approx. Im in Rockhampton so somewhere in Queenland. Cheers Paul

What is actually wrong with it? Toyota will replace everything whether it needs it or not, it may just need rings, bearing, head done and gasket kit which is not much money especially if you do it yourself.

Hi Chris, apparantly its either a piston skirt or possibly a gudgeon pin??? they are not sure. Still runs but has a very loud tick to it. First thought it was a valve or something similar. Its been a while since i worked on a motor and dont have the tools anymore. Things seem too expensive up here!

The dealer should be able to tell what is wrong. Need to get a second opinion, how many kms has it done seems strange failed when only 7 years old, especially failure as bad as you say! Dealer price is way to expensive, go to a recommened repairer (someone you know has used) and will probaly get a better job done.

Hi Troo Bloo, Itys done around 198,000. No one seem to be able to accurately diagnose it with any certainty. Might be this or that etc...

"Well the official advice from the Toyota dealer is that mu 1999 3.0L Hilux ute is terminal and needs a rebuild or new motor"

is it terminal or can it be rebuilt? They need to state what IS wrong, clearly.

No1 suggests "about $4K"? to rebuild, OR

$4K? for 2nd hand motor (+ rebuild ) together should have some change out of $10K..

Never take any vehicle back to a dealer once it is out of warranty. They are only going to strip you naked for anything they can get. Their business is simply selling vehicles, they really have no vested interest in anything that ocurrs after that.

Go to a specialist (engine rebuilder, transmission specialist, auto electrician, etc), who deals with with the items every day, and genuinely has a business interest in your satisfaction.
