G'day Everyone,
Have a question for the Toyota boffins.
Do the post 1990 (HZJ75) 75 series landcruisers use the smaller weaker front diff as they do now in the 78/79 series?
Cheers
Chris.

They do use a smaller diff but I think it might be different to the latest 78/79's.
On the later trucks the housing is different and I think the pinion is higher than the earlier trucks. I might be wrong on the last pinion bit but haven't had two together to compare. The higher pinion is what causes the failure in load conditions in reverse.
I had a 1990 HZJ75 for 10 years and 190k and after a few other owners blew front diffs I was very careful not to try and reverse up anything too steep in low range especially if loaded. Never had a problem with my front diff though.

Gday...My o-pinion...haha
Yes....all hzj 7* had the high pinion...dont know if 8/9's have different diffs, but housings in some of these are coil sprung instead of cart sprung...
To strengthen them....fit an air locker centre....change ratios back from 4.3/1 to 4.56 or 4.1 as in std 80 series...the reason i say this is the 4.1 has 41 teeth on an 8 inch ring, the 4.3 has 43....each tooth is therefore 5% thinner on the later ring.
(4.56 run 41/9)
Also have a solid spacer machined up to sit where the collapseable one used to go.

Thanks Guys,
Wasn't sure on this one - The reason I ask - I had a HZJ75 ute and never had problem with the front diff including use of the bitumen at 4x4 parks etc. I am contemplating buying a 78/79 turbo troopie and was worried about the bad press the front diff seems to attract.
cheers

78/79series have identical diffs to the 105series.
Except the HDJ78/79 (TD) run with a 4.1 ratio.
the HZJ78/79 (normally asp) runs with the 4.3 ratio.
Maybe what Andrew suggests above is what applies here - maybe the 4.1 diffs have fewer, but stronger teeth. I don't know, but sounds plausible. I've only heard of one broken front diff on a 79series.
