I bought a set of 265/75R16 earlier this year. 2 desert trips, 10,000km.
Had one sidewall puncture, no chipping, and no visible wear. i'd expect that they are going to wear well.

One mate has the same and he's happy, probably done the same mileage on trips only.

G'day Phil
Would you say that the sidewall puncture would have happened irrespective of the brand of tyre? Or do you think they have weak walls? I am looking at getting a set in near future. No chipping sounds promising. How do you find them for grip in muddy situations and tread cleaning ability?
Thanks from the Moose.

Moose,
Where I go, sidewall punctures are common. I was disappointed as I was hoping the Silent Armours would be puncture free, like the MTRs I abused over the previous 2 years. They have a different sidewall construction to the MTRs, being 2ply instead of 3 ply, but Goodyear claim that they have the "Dura whatever" puncture technology. But I think it was a sharp piece of steel that pieced the sidewall on a station track in far Western Qld. It was repaired with a single plug, and replaced free-of-charge by the Beaurepaires warranty when I got back home.

My gut feeling is that the Silent Armour sidewalls are as strong as any other tyre out there, but I don't think they are as good as the MTR. On my trips, most brands including the the BFGs and the Coopers tend to get sidewall punctures. Many of my friends now run MTRs or Silent Armours over the other brands

We really need a lot more collective experience. It may be a one-off. But I have been happy with every aspect of the tyre, but haven't tried them in mud yet.

Hi Friar,

I just put a set of Goodyear MTR's on the Prado last week in that size. Lots noisier than the Cooper A/T that they replaced but quite bearable (Prado is very quiet with windows up anyway).

Only done 300km on them so far but did a few fast kms on some dirt roads oer the weekend and was very impressed with the secure grip feel. No real difference from tarmac! With the A/T's you do feel that you are on a different surface but the MTR's just eat up the gravel! Must be careful not to get too over confident there.....

From the sounds of it you may not do enough offroad work to justify the MTRs but I can say that I am very happy with them. I also have a a set of Cooper ATR's on a separate set of alloy rims (bit of an investment) so I can put those on for long road trips and get best of both worlds.

I did look at the Silent Armours but I had heard so many good things on this forum about the MTR's so they got the gig this time around.

Cheers
Muddy
