Hello All you 4JX1 engine jackaroo owners.
There is a new recall on this motor and Ive only just found out.
Apparently its to do with the sleeving around the o ring seals being too big.
Holden I believe are replacing all the injectors on this motor.
And I also put on a 2 3/4 inch mandrel bend exhaust system the other day as
well.
I was lucky to have a bog standard 3.0 TD engined jackaroo being Dynod at the same time. It was giving an indicated 87 kw output.
Mine with the new exhaust was giving 120 Kw output.............so how about that.
Heaps more grunt and the
seat of the pants test proves it.......now onto the EFI chip upgrade and then another dyno test.
Cheers
Geoff

An almost 40% increase in power- with just an exhaust upgrade ???
I thought the 'standard' is rated at 118kw.!!

Yes they are 118 Kw rating.......on a flywheel dyno with no accessories attached.
They went through all their Jackaroo files for the Dyno and none got anywhere near
mine with the new exhaust.
Im very pleased with the result and now its onto a Chip modification.
Cheers

Hi Geoff,
That recall actually came out in 2000!
I wouldn't like your chances of warranty with the mods you've done.

Hi Steve..........yes that was the first recall, this is one that came up in June this year with Isuzu finally doing a worldwide recall of the 4JX1 and covers from 1998 to end of production.
This Is a different problem.........Holden told me that its the sleeves that are the problem for this one not the seals.......although the seals suffer degradatio because of it.

Oh just thought Id add a comment to my last. I did the same sort of Mod to my Isuzu MU (Exhaust) and got the same sort of results. And as for warranty its out of original warranty now anyway so it doesnt really matter.
By the way the guys at
United told me that even the latest model Nissan, also rated at 118 KW, hasnt gone above 90 on their dyno and yes it accounts for driveline losses etc. So it appears that alternators, Power steering, Fans, Airconditioning all take a fair wack off the rated HP.
Even my tyres suck up about 5kw greater than the standard tyres. But that why Dynos are good. You can test the good with the bad.

Hi Again Geoff,
Just to clarify the recall scenario for others that may be interested.
The original recall in 2000 was to replace injector o rings. It was modified in 2003 to include sleeves as
well. The latest in 2006 is to replace the injectors.
Regards,
Steve

Geoff,
I agree and there is an awful lot of them out there too.
There is a breakpoint on the injectors and they are not all being replaced. Very stringent control from Holden in the distribution of parts.

Yep -
mine is booked in and they are waiting on parts from Holden - don't know when it'll happen - quite a backlog I'm told.

Hi Geoff
As a fellow TD Jack owner I'm extremely interested in the exhaust upgrade. Been plenty of talk of Petrol owners doing it with decent results on other sites, but none really with diesel.
the standard questions, exactly what was installed, where, how much etc.!
Looking forward to this one. I suppose with that sort of output increase, economy will be a lot better too as you will need less right foot for the same old accelleration rate?

Gday Jack(Maybe)
Yes it was a good outcome. Ive just been looking over the Dyno test and its actually 120 kw at the back
wheels. And it does suffer losses due to the Auto and Big Tyres.
I got the exhaust system through 4wdsystems in South Oz as
well as a 133 Litre fuel
tank.
The Exhaust was about 900 bucks, 2 3/4 inch mandrel bend system. But im happy as hell with it as Im about to travel to
Melbourne to pick up my new offroad Van and the extra power will not go astray having that on the back.
Im also looking at a chip upgrade which if their claims are true.......should give me about 150 kw at the back
wheels. Isuzu diesels have always responded
well to improvements.
Its not just the exhaust pipe is the muffler too............a free flow muffler makes a world of difference and comes included in the supplied system. Not telling you to suck eggs here Jack, but a mandrel bend system doesnt bend the system out of round on its diameter. It allows for much better flow than a conventional system which creates Eddies etc in the system.
The Guys also did Exhaust temperature tests along the length of the new system and they came up really
well.
ANy more questions??
Cheers
Geoff

G'day Prax.,
. We run a 2002 3l Rodeo. I'm not a mechanic's shadow, but am led to believe this engine is unlike it's counterpart in the Jack. While we're happy with the improved performance over the lovely old 2.8 Isuzu, the 10%+ drop in fuel economy grates. Any advice?

Gday Jeff from Geoff,
Yes im also under the same impression about the Rodeo. It went straight from the old 2.8 to the 3.0 and missed the 3.1 Jackaroo engine. It also has a front mounted intercooler rather then the Top Mount, which should actually be better but doesnt look as Sexy!!!
Im led to believe that a chip is available for the Rodeo motor. Also a decent exhaust wouldnt go astray at all!!! So there are some options for you. Ive always liked a good exhaust as it allows much better flow of exhaust gasses and allows the turbo to spin up quicker due to less back pressure. This also increases economy and power in Theory.
I put a 2 1/2 inch system on my Isuzu MU (3.1TD) and its now a pocket rocket for a Diesel. My wife drives it in the City and we still get about 750 Kms out of a
tank.
Ill have to put an intercooler on next!!!!!!!! It rated 88 KW at the back
wheels when it was supposed to put out 88 KW at the fly wheel.
Dont know about the economy stakes yet with the Jack but Id say Ill get better economy out of her yet!!
Another option is to go for the Gas Conversion for Diesel...........this is interesting as it doesnt replace the Diesel (like a petrol engine) it coexists with it. I was told to expect about 30 percent increase in Power with the Jack and much better economy to boot. So there is another option.
But everything is relative and it costs money. The cheapest thing for you to do is get a Unifilter (better flow than a standard) and even that will make a small difference.
Hope this helps a bit.
Cheers
Geoff

Jeff, Just make sure you find someone that knows what they are doing. They can be a Fiddly motor and having access to a Dyno would also help.
Cheers
