Scrub Bars

I have the opportunity to get some custom rock slides/steps built for my GQ for $850. They are great but no scrub bars that protect the front fenders. Also thinking about ARB, they sell steps and scrub bars for about $990.

My question is are the scrub bars worth while?

Do they do a good or bad job at protecting the front fenders?

Would they be worth the extra money or just add weight? I would also have to get a new bull bar (i was going to get one anyway).

Tips from anyone who has scrub bars will be appreciated.

Barnsey,
I've got em on my ute and swear by them. They not only protect the fenders but also add a bit of support to the top of the bull bar for when you hit a decent size roo or similar.

I haven't used them as a jack point yet but I reckon that they would handle the load.
I don't think that they would add a lot of weight as there is not a great deal of difference between rock sliders and scrub bar/ slider combo.
From memory someone makes both that are seperate to each other so you could try the slider first then add the scrub bars later, just an idea.
Cheers
Kev

Dunno bout everyday 4wding but i swore by them for cross country. you wouldnt be able to turn through scrub without them the trees would cave your front fenders in

I have had them in the past and they have saved the truck when I hit a cow at 100kmh one night out of Alice. The scrub barts prevented the bullbar coming back into the grille and it just twisted a tad.

I dont have them on my current GQ and the flares are showing the wear of the bush. But trucks are only recycled earth so if they get scratched beyond repair another one.

It depends on how precious you are about your truck. Weight should only be about 5/6kilos per side extra.

Lucky you had them on when you hit the cow. I only really thought about rubbing trees on fenders, didn't think about them strengthening the bull bar. They are definately the go now. I think my missus would appreciate that too.

I was eye-ing off a set on a blokes GU at Woomera 2 weeks ago. He was from Toowoomba and said he got a local fabricator to make them for him for $250-. They looked the goods alright and had the chequerplate on the side-steps.

I want a set, but find it difficult to justify the $1000- pricetag that ARB and TJM put on them.

Yeah Barnesy on my first 75series I got a local (Townsville at the time) Truck body builder to make the side rails and steps for about $420 (5 years ago). As Roachie has said much cheaper than the ARB, TJM option and they can make them fit to what ever bullbar you already have. Yes if you do any tight offroad work they are a valuable option for all the reasons stated above. I'm looking for someone in SA to make me a set for my 100 series. Wouldn't worry about the weight - its probably only a cartons worth...

Scrub bars look the go. A truck body builder sounds like a good idea. I'm sure the ARB are good but they bump up prices to pay for advertising. I may also start looking around in Adelaide for someone who could do it.

cant say enuff about the top end of the bull bar strength advantage..not just in the bush but all sorts of city driveing situations, parking etc, protects the panels from scratching....i have scratches down at least one side of my scrub rails...depending on their height and width of the step section and your fitness they can be a bit annoying haveing to step over them every time you enter the car but its a small problem considering the other benefits
