Australia Takes World Basketball Championship
Australian national women's basketball team, the Opals, have beaten Russia to take the world championship title for the first time, and secure their place in the 2008 Olympics. The Australian side took the final 91-74.
Penny Taylor won the Most Valuable Player award, scoring 28 points for her national side. She beat out forward Lauren Jackson and Russian Maria Stepanova to take the offer. Australia played the entire world tournament UNDEFEATED.

United States beat Brazil to take the bronze medal.

World champs in any given sport is a huge effort and against teams with paid full time professionals is better again.
Thanks for letting me know, as the news had slipped passed me yesterday and I was unaware until this thread, so there is cause for threads like this even a day later.
