Heard last night that a land owner through which the eastern access road passes is going to stop access - that is, the great 4WD part of this NP will no longer be accessible.
Any truth in this rumour?

Don`t know bout that but I was down there on the weekend and the tracks are in pretty bad shape.
There wasn`t to many ppl around either I think its nearly to the point of not being enjoyable until they bulldoze it once again.

Hi Keith

Is this the road where you go right at Ballandean (coming from Brissy) go along a dirt road where you go through a gate to collect the N.P. form before you explore/camp in the park?
If so, then I hope this is just a rumour only.
The sad part is that more than likely a minority of inconsiderate people probably have misused the farmers hospitality when driving through his property to get to the park enterance.
I suppose the farmer has every right to stop access, if this is the case?
Will read with interest from the replies you get.
This is a great N.P. to test your 4WD skills out on and it would be a shame if there is no other access to this wondeful day trip/camping place.

Yes - it was raised at our club meeting last night. Not a rumour. Letter from Government department was tabled. They are accepting objections until sometime in October (can't recall date). Given that it's a private property access issue I bet it will be closed. I doubt NP will bother thrying to find another way for us to gain access. So it looks very much like another 4WD destination is about to be lost.
Cheers from the Moose.

Hi Moose

Thanks for the current info!
I hope they find a way to compromise on this or grade another enterance.
I'm sure only those "in the know" will be permitted access to the park via the farmer's property should access be denied.
Hardly seems fair if it's closed off to the majority of good people who value 4WDing, do and have done the right thing when they have visited there.

But it is not being closed off because of the GOOD people out there, it will be because of the minority of the HOON 4WD's that could not give a stuff about anything, especially Treading Lightly and repecting other peoples property.

I have seem an aweful lot of track and even complete forest closures in NZ due to this minority that spoils life for the majority.

Sad to hear about Sundown. We went there earlier in the year and it was a bit rough but easy in the main, just slow so you don't shake your vehcile to bits. Great campsite at the end of the track.

Saw a RAV 4 at the campsite with a very worried couple in it, easy hills in the Troopy but a real worry for the RAV4 to get up, we know, we spent long enough offroading a Freelander before we got the Troopy and Rangie and felt for them.

We have a club trip there sometime in the next few months - looks like it will be cancelled.

Hi Zuk

I only know of the east enterance. Just checked the N.P. map and it shows no west or south entry. There is obiviously a more detailed map somewhere to view. Would a sunmap or RACQ map show up that detail?

If you say there is these entry points then it's great to hear there is another way into the camping areas.
One question more, what are the tracks like in from the west and south?
Is it like the east track, better or worse?

Bob - Sundown is in two parts. The Eastern side, which is the one with good 4WDing etc, is the one accessed via Ballandean and is the one subject to probable closure. There is only the one track in. The other side (Western) will still be open but there's no 4WDing in that side - you can take the Commodore in to the camping area on that side. The two sides do not connect due to the terrain. I suppose hardy bush walkers can still see all the NP if the Ballandean entry is closed by walking in from the other side but I reckon you'd have to be a real hard core walker for that.

Muddy,i stumbled on the entrance from off the Texas/Stanthorpe rd about 2yrs ago.I could only go so far i think it was a rangers house or similar there we turned around as we were in our motor home. When i read the thread i looked at the Natmap raster Premium & it shows several in roads in from the above entrance be it as Mose says only so far in & i am not familiar with camp grounds as i have not been back.

Moose you are most likely right you are obviously more familiar with the park than i so i don't doubt youre word.Again on the Natmap it shows another entry in off the Bruxner Hwy from Tenterfield.
Sorry took so long to reply but we had a blackout when i was about to reply last night.

Hi Cackles

If you decide to go in for the day or two. What you take in you take out. You'll find pit toilets Camp at Burrow's Waterhole, the pick of the camps IMHO. You can go for a drive down futher and do the circuit back to Burrow's.

Hi Cackles

Your welcome!!!

Girraween NP just south east a bit from Sundown is another nice spot, especially when the crowds are not there. It's more popular than Sundown but it's just as spectacular for it's other attractions. It's more a family and bushwalking NP I find but none the less just as relaxing. Bald Rock camp gorund was closed off the last 2 times I was there but Castle Rock camp ground (toilets and hot showers) has nicely allocated grassy spots with lots of shady palces to camp. Within the park it also has self sufficent secluded bush camps too.

Best to ring the ranger and may book before going to Girraween.

Enjoy!!!
