Bit of an outback mystery ?

Around the 9th July I was at Sandy Blight Junction near Kintore. I'd been talking to my passenger about Lens plaue and had promised a photo stop. The photos happened but we couldn't see the plaue. Having been there the year before I was pretty sure where it should have been, but it wasn't there.
Now I'm assured by Connie Beadell that it was there on the 24th of July !
Had it just been myself I would have put it down to old timers, but two of us looked and couldnt find anything on the post. (settle down Scully!)

So, if anyone here saw the plaque during July I'd love to know the date.

TIA

I was there about a year ago and it was there then.

On the post about 30 metres north of the junction.

Looking for adventure.
In whatever comes our way.

Hi Footloose.
After our weekend trip to Woomera recently, to have a look at the Rocket Range, I did some research on Len beadell for our club newsletter. I had a look at the Len Beadell website under Desert updates. In her article about plaque maintenance dated sometime this month, Connie Sue Beadell mentions that many of the replica plaques are now disappearing!
On our last trip to Cape York two years ago , we noticed that the signs that were there in the car park on our first visit to the 'tip' in 2002( before you do the walk to the tip) were no longer there.

Footloose,

I have a photo of the post and plaque. On the opposite side of the road from where the Sandy Blight goes off, down the track a little way...like the other post said, about 30 metres north. I haven't worked out how to put photos on here yet..it's driving me crazy but I do have the photo.

Its looking like another of those 'Outback Vandals' has decided that they needed the souvenir. Don't you love the way these people think that such plaques would be much more at home in their living room rather than in their original location where they are of more historical value.

There is only a couple of words that can be used to describe these type of thieves but they are not acceptable to use in this forum.

JO, that was my reaction when I couldn't find it. That, and a great sense of disappointment for future travellers. Imagine my amazement when I'm assured that it was there 10 days later.

I was there at Sandy Blight Junction with Connie on 6/5/06 and took some photos of the plague. I'm attempting to insert one photo but I'm not so skilled at that.

Footie ,
I have solved the mystery - the dentist removed the plaque during a regular visit .
Cheers ,

It probably has ended up on some city slickers wall ,I don't know why people can't leave things alone.Like the sign that went missing from Gorrie WWII Airstrip just North from Larimah , when ever i was in the area I would go and park in the shade ,make a coffee and re-read the sign ,and why was i so interested in the airstrip, well it was up and running the month I was born with 33 Officers, 1054 Airmen, and at one time had 6500 personnel and 440 Civilians, anyhow the last time I was there some mongrel had taken the sign,it was a big sign too ,

Sad stuff re the removal of goods - makes one wonder at the social life they lead - surely the "Trophy Displays" would be seen noticed by any of their visitors who may well be disgusted?
I have an interest at Gorrie as well - my late Dad was stationed there when it was up and running.
When we called in we chatted with a chap from Pt Lincoln S.A. who "does" such places over with a metal detector and collects stuff such as ammo clips, shells, clothing buckles etc - he had been camped there a day or two to do so!
Cheers - Mobi

Doug, didn't realize you were so ...umm..how can I put this...old ...well anyone older than me must be....of course you're probably in better nick :))))))

I know Gorrie strip, and have sat in the shade and read that sign a couple of times. To hear that it's missing is bad news, and I am saddened.

These things are part of Australia's history. Stealing such "trophies" is not only mindless but it destroys the experience for those who have yet to come.

I'm not a violent person, but if I found them I'd be prepared to think about a change in my personal philosophy !
