Hi there

I'm off to Fraser on the 9-12 October this year. No QLD school holidays but still NSW.

Do you think it will be crowded? If so then are there any 'quiet' camping spots with toilets that anyone can recommend. I've been to Fraser 3 x before but always at off-peak times.

I've heard the aboriginal run sites are good and worth to experience?

Thanks
Grant

We stayed at Dundubarra and found it quiet with great facilities.

Grant, I'll be there with 4 other families (about 14 people) around the same time (7th to 14th). We are camping at Dundabara. We often camp on the beaches, but with so many people, including a few women, we thought one of the camp grounds with toilets and showers might be better.

If you want toilets, you will need to go to one of the established camp grounds, all of which are pretty good. There are noise curfews in most of the camp grounds. The only noise problems we have had are occasional 'backpacker' groups, but generally no problem.

We love Central Station camp ground, but no good if you are going for fishing; but it is close to the main lakes.

Others may differ, but I would not go to Sandy Cape alone. At least 2 vehicles with experienced drivers and recovery equipment needed up there IMO.

But north of Orchid Beach is certainly much quieter and away from the crowds.

Also, are there toilets up there?

No there are no toilets up there but is a very spectacular spot and quiet, we travelled there solo and left on the out going tide to give us ample time to get there, didnt really find it hard until the very end part, it did get a little soft. We would have seen maybe six or seven vehicles on our way up there and we found that a lot keen fishers would head up there for an hour or two then head back down before the tide came in, so there was allways someone around. There was only one other camp up there for days.

There are toilets at Ocean Lake, but you can't camp withing 500m (I think) of the lake itself

How sad is that!

it'll be just like the Western road to the South of Garry's Anchorage, closed for repair and then never reopened

Sandy cape is one of my most favourite spots. We camped last winter, right in the middle of a very cold spell, half way along the beach from sandy cape to the cape lighthouse. Was amazing, so quiet alone and bueatifull. We went alone but It is advisable to be with at least one other vehicle. We got stuck in soft sand but were able to dig ourselves out. (Only a Diahatsu Rocky)

Waddy is great, behind the sand dunes, you have to book, (QPWS anal rules, why you have to book is just wierd, its never full, unless you go during the fishing comp)
has showers and walking distance to the fishing.

If you like beach camping, near a lake, camp near ocean lake.
And if you really want peace and quiet and something different, go to Wuthamba, one of my favourite places. Dont forget the RID tho!!
You can even take a tinnie there and venture out a little bit into the bay and fish there, the fishing out there is amazing. they have toilets and showers there but no hot water.
Im leaving for 10 days up the northern end of the island, with my tinnie, tomorrow, looks like rain coming! doh!

Another place we like camping at which is a very little known spot is Coolooli creek at the southern end of the island, on the western side. Very deep water off there, great fishing.

cheers
John.

Guys,

Yep, i agree that 2 cars at the top is by far the safest way to explore. If you go past the light house (not suppost too) it gets very soft and dangerous. Not recommended (even with 2 cars)!!

John... regarding taking a tinny, i'm looking to do this during my trip up at Xmas. I assume you would not recommend a trailor but car topper only (due to number of people and difficulties reversing on narrow inland tracks)? What lakes can you take a tinny too? Can it be powered? I thought there weren't any, i was looking to launch on the south west side of the island (don't remember the name of the place but there was a 20km overgrown track heading south west from Central).

Any thoughts appreciated.

No you can take even a big boat! Ive seen many people taking huge boats up fraser island, but of course they have large towing vehicles and support also. I just took my 12foot tinnie on its small light trailer, but it had 13 inch tyres, larger than normal.
Dont even try to put a powered boat in a lake. Boats are banned from the lakes, only canoes and small stuff like that are allowed, like a kids blow up boat.
The place sw of central your thinking about is garry's anchorage, I have heard the track is closed. You dont need to go there, go to coolooli creek as they have a concrete boat ramp there, or if your keen to go somewhere more remote with more fish, go to wuthamba, but your setup will have to be rugged for the long rough sandy track.

cheers and good luck!

If you wanr quiet and toilets then there is always Ungowa on the western side. Not much else there but it is certainly quiet,

If you are taking a tinnie then you have easy access to Sandy Strait and some very good fishing.

Otherwise I'd recommend Dundabarra or Cathedral if you want to be on the beach or Central Station (my personal favourite) if you would rather be in the rainforest.

You can camp in the tennis court (when you see it you will understand) at Lake Boomanjin, usually very quiet and has amenities. Or at Dilli Village (run by Sunshine Coast Uni) good facilities, big open camp area and the advantage of being on the beach and on a track so you can always get in and out regardless of tide.

I second the sentiments regarding not travelling solo past Orchid Beach.

Be sure to have fun

cheers

Is Lake Mackenzie still worth camping at? I was there in school hols 1994 and very crowded, but it was still an unforgettable experience..thought it might have been re-developed since then..

Chers and beers

Mckenzie lake campground is closed forever. Too much environmental impact. Such a shame, but popularity always kills nature:(
I camped there three times over the last 4 years and loved every second of it, but you can still pick a spot there and have lunch, have a swim and move on and camp at central, which has hot showers anyway.

I took a set of flippers and goggles and dived the deep cold water when I was there last week and found that just outside the white sand area, wheres its black and deep, the bottom is LITTERED with crap! Please people when you go swimming, dont go with stuff in ya pockets!!!
