As a travelling novice, I am thinking of purchasing a used Mitsubishi Canter fitted out as a motorhome. Can anyone tell me whether there are quirks/problems with this vehicle that I should be on particular look-out for?

Can't help directly, but if you are considering fitting out a 4WD light/medium truck then also think about the Isuzu range, they have a good reliability record.
One thing that may be a problem is that these vehicles will have limited 'off the shelf' 4WD accessories available from the normal suppliers (bars,
winches, diff locks,
suspension kits, fuel tanks etc)

I used to drive a Canter for a living, and I must admit it was quite nice to drive, for a truck that is. Fairly economical 4.2 l diesel (me thinks), but only really had a comfortable cruising speed of 90-95 km, which if travelling, is more than ample IMHO.
Not bad on the hills, used to drive it up the '20 mile' outside of
Busselton, which is a fairly steep and quick climb, and it had no problems, even with a few tonne on the back.
good luck

I have one as you are thinking about ..4wd ..i find it fantastic...comfortable and cruises nicely 80-90 kph..consumption approx 14 litres / 100 kms 3.9 diesel...i dont push it hard and it gets up hills but out in the outback..thats not a problem...

Pholly.
The canter is a very capable vehicle. It has a rear diff lock standard, The only problem I have found is the limited
suspension travel of the front axle, that is if you hit a big bump at speed you can be thrown about, otherwise they are very good and efficient using less fuel than a wagon towing a van. Eric.
