Hello all, a quick one,

In the midst of doing some work, and the question has been raised, what does Toyota say is the recommended speed for changing from 2H to 4H and vice versa i.e. on the fly.

thanks in advance.

Less than 8kph says the sticker on my sun visor. Just recently I did do this and I was almost stopped and it made a bit of a noise that didn't sound to healthy so I reckon 'not moving' is the best speed.

Ahh, just re-read; thought you meant H4 to L4. As above; any speed.

Do it driving in a straight line with a throttle 'blip' to ensure positive engagement.

You can do low to high on the fly by driving 'Mack twin-stick' style. A simultaneous drop of a couple of gears on the box and a shift in the transfer case works a treat. Confidence - not force, is the key to success in ths operation.

Fortunately my beer gut prevents me driving a B-series Mack without rubbing a hole in my shirt, so the problem is purely a hypothetical one these days.;-)))

Go the mighty 'R series'!

Mike, the transfer case has a synchro for entry from H2 to H4, so as long as you don't push it to the max like trying to go to H4 whilst turning a corner or without locking the hubs first it's fine at any speed. The synchro is as big as any in the gearbox, triple cone too I think at least in the later transfer cases.

On the other hand there's no synchro from N to H4 and the gear splines are small and sharp, so N to H4 at any speed risks rounding them off making it harder to go N to H4 at a standstill later on. Casper

Forgot to say - I normally use the clutch for H2/H4 shifts so that only the read prop shaft is driving the transfer case. Casper

Hi Cowpat,
There is no syncho on a landcruiser transfer case. WHat happens is that as long as you are not spinning wheels, or turning a hard corner, the front and back output shafts are spinning at the same speed. therefore the dog type engagement does not notice a thing. Better to be swift with your change though. If you try and change into 4H with the hubs unlocked you will get a good grind. H4 to N to L4 is better at stop or very slow, preferably stopped.
Yes you can change from 2H to 4H at any speed. What you are doing is sliding a sleeve with teeth in it over a shaft with splines in it. Once it is in it is in, if its out it is out. I have rebuilt tansfer cases from 40 series to 100 series including constant 4wd and they are all the same, minor difference for the constant 4wd.
Regards
Ray

Had a look in my LC100 owner's manual...like V8Diesel said you can shift from L4 to H4 at any speed, just need to press in the cluch. Awesome.

H4 to L4 must be at stop or less than 8 kph; and H4/H2, H2/H4 at any speed can leave the clutch out.

I've seen what I thought was a synchro (yellow metal rings etc) in the part-time 80 series and 100 series transfer cases but totally misunderstood what it was for. Might not exist in the full-time boxes, I've had one of those apart but just can't for the life of me remember. I mixed up how the internals worked but now I have been enlightened! I'll be doing those twin stick upshifts (and loving it) from now on. Casper

Hi cowpat, don't know if I'd recommend low to high on the fly though as general operating procedure. I used to drive Landcruiser bush bashers full time as my job in mineral exploration and you get quite good after a while at operating that particular item of plant.

I'd take it up to max in 5th low, then clutch in and simultaneously go to hi range on the transfer and third or second on the gearbox. Toyota 10 speed.

You get pretty good at changing flats and fixing split rims too (10 per day). Two person lifts of full, heavy duty galvanised 44 gallon drums on to tray back 75 series Cruisers as well. (that's why I'm so busted up nowdays)
