Gday all, On a recent trip to the Simpson my 80 series cruiser (91 model) side mirrors self destructed with a bit of help from the road conditions! The problem, these electric mirrors are only held in by one little screw. If that ain't bad enough the thread that this screw beds into is only plastic. The electrical components work just fine but now the mirrors are held in place with race tape.
I'm keen to fix this asap but am reluctant to because I can't see the point in replacing it with the same system that's just going to do the same thing. Does any one have any answers or solutions to this. Perhaps later 80 series had this problem fixed?
Cheers
Joe

Hi Joe,
I went through this dilemma a while back.
Your options are:
1. Replace with Genuine Toyota mirrors @ $385.00 each
2. Replace with aftermarket mirrors (look good quality but unknown) @$150 each
or 3. Do what I did and glued a wall plug into the plastic bit inside and then used a bigger self tapper to hold it in.
Warning: Don't try and redrill a different hole in a more solid area as you can protrude into the gears and the mirrors won't move.
Hope this helps.
Steve

Hi Joe
You could take them off and fir at set from a Hylux, they are the manual type, you will have to drill one hole to fit them

Thanks ray, I even considered fitting the truck type folding mirrors. I'll have a look at the hilux option if the mod/repair job isn't good enough.
Thanks
Joe
