Not sure where you have mounted the UHF, but usually the cigarette lighhter power wire is a good option.

Thanks, that was the cable I was aiming at, but after shredding about a square metre of skin, LOL I have still not found a way of getting to it ! --- and I also got into strife with the Good and Lovely for removing half the dash panels!!!

I would go a battery connection myself, but an easy place to get accessory power would be at the back of the stereo. The stereo should be easy enough to get out if it is a standard jap stereo bracket, then just use your multimeter to find which wire on the connector has acc power and tap into that.

I have mounted the radio under the passenger seat and the remote head is under the ashtray.

Hi eerfree,

GME usually recommends direct connection to the battery, why not their advice? Many vehicle manufacturers also recommend this, along with separating wiring from air bag and ABS wiring. There is a remote possibility that these can be compromised.

These radios only draw a few milliamps and wont flatten you battery unless left on for many days.

Cheers

I've installed an extra mini fuse box (with 4 spade type fuses). Run one cable from pos. battery, and link one side of fuses together. Fuses for UHF/ Drive lights/ Reverse spot light/ HF radio. Save having spagetti off battery terminal.

I had my UHF wired to accessory power intially (paid somebody else to do it!) but within a month I was back getting them to rewire it direct to battery as it absolutely gave me the "tom tits" when it would shut off every time I stopped and restarted the car.

Nothing worse than somebody trying to call you on a club convoy trip and the radio went off 20 mins ago when you stopped for smoko and restarted. On my TD Prado the power seems to shut off momentarily when you engage the starter to fire up the engine (probably quite normal as it maximises power to starter and avoids power spikes to accessories). The radio (an Icom IC400PRO) would shut down in that time and not come up again. I did look at activating the auto on feature when power is available but then it would come on EVERY time I start the car and I do not use the UHF for the 90% of days when I just drive to work in Adelaide where the airwaves are ruled by MORONS.

Now I have total control of when the radio is on or off. Leaving on overnight does not have any real effect on battery so that is no drama. Is good to pull up at camp sometimes and leave it on if expecting other vehicles to call up without having to turn the radio on again or leave the ignition on.

Just points to be aware of.

Cheers

My GME book tells me I can hook it up direct or via the ignition switch, maybe they have different instructions for there various products? Thanks.

That is my next project!!

I found how to remove the radio (and only lost a little bit of skin) and have connected the UHF to the back of the stereo.

Thanks for that info I have it all working now and we are away for a month at the end of next week so I will see how things go on the road.
