MY brand new nissan gu tray back with 14,000klms on the clock has sprung a leak between the gear box and sump.On closer inspection i notice there is a sponge there from the factory?? Is this a common fault on the 4-2 and is this why Niissan fit a sponge to soak the oil up????
I HAVE TO SAY I HAVE OWNED 2 land rover discoverys the last being a 300tdi 1997 model which never leaked a drop??
So much for japanese 4bys being leak free. i guess its a trip to the dealer for a fix up.
cheers donnnnny

Donnnnny,
The sponge is to allow the breathing of the clutch while keeping dust out and minimising
water ingres.
As far as the leak is concerned, after 235000kms on my TD42 I am yet to experience a leak, but you may have been unlucky.
If its new it will have warranty so take it back and get it fixed under warranty!!
Most likely the leak will be from the rea main oil seal in the engine, if it is, then it is also possible that it will stop by itself as the seal runs in to the surface of the crankshaft.

Yeah mate go in for a warranty fix> it’s Possible the seal was faulty from factory or incorrectly installed.
There may have also been dirt or a sharp edge on the sealing surface that was missed during assembly and this has caused it to leak.

Thought I had oil leak in same place on my 4.2GU, but cleaned area and leak did not come back. It was where the oil filters were being changed and oil runs down side of block to this area. Might be worth checking.

Obviously you have the 'delux' sponge model.
Just trying to figure out whether it is the Clarke Rubber Sponge or the Dunlop Sponge.
Maybe it is the the sponge cake variety
or
The 'warb' sponge variety.
Don't worry Doooooooony I'll figure it out soon as to what Sponge variety you need.

TD42 in Ford Maverick. 280,000 kms, didn't leak a drop, didn't use a drop.
Take it back, it's a "one off".
They don't leak.

Because you have been so good in providing me with 'Nissan Material' for the next 100 years, you deserve a serious reply. (If I am capable of that, that is).
Over the years I have been the owner of numerous vehicles produced by the Nissan Motor Company. 4 new ones and one used.
One of the new ones in particular drove me to tears & distraction by oil leaking out of the bell housing from new, and lasting 12,000miles before requiring a new clutch kit.
Warranty 12,000miles or 12 months ( Just out and didn't want to know me re warranty) BAD OLD DAYS
Leaking Oil = Gearbox oil.
Ah! must be the seal.
Changed it 6 times (clutch kit and seal/s) before someone at Nisssan had a brilliant idea, only because they had stumbled on the same thing with a Nissan racing vehicle.
It turned to be an 'out of centre' front seal
seat on the front drive shaft. In this case it was 4th gear & drive shaft through the cluthch to the spiggot bearing.
Put a new 4th gear in the gear box, new seals, new clutch and that sucker went without a hiccup until sold years later.
You may have the same situation here with yours.
