I would like to install diff locks in my rodeo and I like the idea of automatic lockers. Went in to ARB and they claim they are dangerous as it won't let you turn corners or it'll lock up in the middle of a corner and then promptly reccommended their air locker which is nearly three times the price of an auto diff lock.
Is ARB right and are auto lockers dangerous?

You walk into ARB expecting them to endorse someone elses autolockers when a good amount of their revenue comes from selling their own airlockers?????????
They do change the way the vehicle drives when used in the rear of a vehicle (rear can "step out" under moderate acceleration around corners), but have no effect in the front unless you are in 4WD and for the most part then it is the desired effect.

I have a V6 4Runner with IFS. I run Detroit lockers in the front and rear and my son as a 3.0 litre turbo diesel Surf running 33x12.5 x 15. Pro Comp rockcrawlers. He has Detroit Lockers front and rear, and neither of us have ever had any problems with steering lock up which is what you will get the ARB Air Lockers.
have found through many years of trial and error that ARB are notorious for knocknig other peoples products. If a salesman did that to me I would turn my back on him and walk out !
Ironically all the Shell V8 touring cars and Formula 1 cars plus Indy cars run Detroit lockers. Go to your nearest 4x4 accessory
shop and get them to talk you through the principle of how a Detroit locker works. That will help make your decision.

Which model rodeo?
The LSD on the rodeo is a sound unit and can be tightened if needed.
I have a Lokka in the front of my 1994 dual cab, slightly heavier steering and a slightly wider turning circle are noticable when the front hubs are locked.
It allows the vechicle to climb up tracks slowly, whereas prior to fitting a run up was required. It will keep going even if it cocks a wheel in the air, this used to stop me cold before it was fitted.
Dangerous?
An auto locker MAY have an adverse effect on steering if you are driveing at speed with 4x4 selected on dirt, I havent noticed it as yet.
ARB are there to sell their product, some of their salsmen can be less than diplomatic. Airlockers have their problems as
well but are generally reveered as the one to have by many.
Do your research, there is a diff lock thread on just about every 4x4
forum in oz, have a read. Work out what you want to do with your 4x4 and how much you want to spend, Id put one in the front first.
Good luck

I have a 97 model. Thanks for the responses I had my suspicions about ARB. My LSD isn't working as I was recently bogged at the Hume Weir and the left rear wheel kept spinning and the right one was stationary.
Thanks to every one for there help.
Cheers,
Neil

Hi wado
The LSD in the Rodeo is normally very efficient. Just a hint if the 'spinning' wheel in in real loose/muddy stuff, and your getting no drive- pull the handbrake on a bit (or a bit of light left foot braking). This will put a slight load on the LSD and it will work heaps better.
Also, ensure the right oil is used in the diff.- I don't remember the right stuff, but the wrong stuff does make a difference.

I have Auto Lockers front and rear of my troopy, yes it does make it a bit harder in the steering, kind of heavier only when the front hubs are locked , I had no problems steering in the Smpson Desert ,if your 4X4 has auto front hubs then i would use DETROIT TRUETRAC® LIMITED SLIP DIFFS anyhow have a browse in my 4x4 page, i have 2 or 3 links there where you will find all you need about diff locks .

Contact Tom @ www.4WDSystems.com.au
They make the 'lokka' brand auto diff locks for the front of Rodeos. Very
well priced, about 1/3 of an ARB air locker.
I have one in the front of my 95 model, as mentioned above, turning circle and steering is affected slightly, but traction level goes way up.
Absolutely nothing to go wrong in them either, air operated lockers depend on many other bits to make them work (compressor, hoses, actuator) and if any one of them fail you are left with open diffs.
