BB, sorry, but I to have to say it, "do a search" on this site and you will find lots about upgrading Patrol 4.2TD. If you have any specific questions after your search, ask them and I am sure the forumites will be only too willing to answer them. Saves reinventing the wheel. John

Hi there.....
I had a Turbo-Glide systems kit fitted last Christmas. Worth the dough?????!
Expensive job, mine was a shade under $5K by the time my injectors were done and the unit set up properly, but goes like a rocket.
I wanted it predominantly for towing as our trailer is quite heavy (1020kgs tare) and it has made towing much easier.

As I understand it, the factory units are not as powerful as the ones, a few fellows I know have ditched the turbos from their GU's and fitted kits for more grunt.
I don't have an on it, am thinking of upgrading the radiator in the near future though, but mainly 'cos there is a drama with my existing radiator that may require it to be replaced anyway. My system spools up around 1800rpm and max boost is 11psi. I drive off the VDO pyrometer and usually use 550 degrees C as a maximum EGT. (I have been told I can safely go to 600 but prefer not to.)

The Turbo-Glide is (I think) a Garret turbo, is high mounted beside the engine on passengers side and runs a 2 1/2" exhaust as part of the kit. I was tempted to go 3" and if I ever replace the exhaust would definitely go 3".

Click here for their web page

I have NO affiliation with them, just a happy customer!!!

Hope this helps,

Cheers

Brian

I recently had my origional turbo reworked 3" exhaust fitted fuel pump advanced to earlier gq specs by United fuel injection Perth, know useing 5th gear towing heavy off road tandem full van ,no probs havent checked consumption ,but would b suprised if its not better. 2004 TDi 4.2 Old turboed GQ 4,2 would tow in 5th gear no worries

Hi BB,

Roachie is about the only one I know that has fitted after market turbo to his 4.2 Patrol (non intercooled version) but he his off on hols again at the moment so probably won't get an answer from him in any hurry.

Plenty of us have had the original turbo worked over with good results (me included). I would say yes they are worth the $$ to rework the original ones but that is a personal question that really only you can answer. Try to get a worked 4.2 to drive and you will soon have your answer. Most modification places will allow this if they have one of their own. I have the Safari intercooler so I don't know the answer regarding upgrade of Nissan one but I think they do bugger all unless towing hard in the heat anyway.

Look into the overheating problems associated with this motor so you are aware of all possible outcomes when modifying.

If you are in Brisbane I would permit you to come for a run in mine if you can't get a hold of another one to drive. (just leave your email addy in a response here if you want this and I will get in touch.)

Cheers, Trevor.
