Victoria High Country

A large number of seasonal track closures will unfortunately keep you skirting around the edge of the high country. (not open until 1st weekend in Nov)
Some area's currently open of interest. Mt Terrible, Mt Skene, Lake Cobbler accross to the Buckland Valley. Diffficult to link together without driving on the Tar.
Now that the ski season is over the Alpine resorts have great prices in the lodges that stay open for the summer.

Without being offensive, without a backup car, I wouldnt be doing much alone up there.. Weather can change so fast up there, and with the wind and storms lately many tracks are gettin blocked with fallen trees.

Seasonal closures will be hard enough to get aroudn the place, but thats what they are for.

i can see a late openign to season this yr for some tracks due to 1/2 fallen trees and blocked tracks.

It's a great time to be away in the high country.
This is the link for Parks Vic Road closures.
It's very informative. We are up there a bit & after encountering big fallen trees across the track/trails I make sure the chainsaw & spare fuel for is packed (I forgot the spare fuel once..... arrrgh! most infuriating).
Personally if your vehicle is up to spec, running superbly you have the necessary emergency spares, good recovery technique, skill & gear, as well as communication equip, you will be fine.

Prepare for the worst & nothing will happen, prepare for nothing & the worst will happen.

Because of the road closures you will flux between black top & trails, but it spectacular country anyway. The highest open road is the Mt Hotham from Omeo through to Harrietville.
A couple of great areas to check out are the Buffalo River State forest through to the Buckland valley State forest, inc West Ovens State forest zones. These areas are all close together.
Of course there is the proverbial classic soft roaders road the Alpine way from Corryong (correct spelling I think) to Thredbo & Kosci!

I am the only Patrol driver in the group (wife refuse to drive it), I better avoid any rough tracks.
The new plan is to go alone the Great Alpine Rd and ask the locals for the local attractions.

What will be the best to Mt Kosciuszko? Following the Great Alpine Rd all the way to Omeo and then take the C545?

We just got back from a week away in Corryong doing the local tracks and lookouts etc. We got to Mt Pinnibar - but had to clear 9 'big' trees with chainsaws and winches. Luckily we were staying with friends and another vehicle accompanied us - lots of hands to clear tracks.

I'm in Gippsland and used the Corryong-Benambra Road. It's a good road (track) - gravel but without corragations. Dust was the only problem. There is some great camping sites along this road next to the Gibbo River - easy to find.

another track to keep up your sleeve would be the Black Mtn Rd, just out of Omeo on the way to Benambra. This should be open and comes out sth of Suggan Buggan and is a beautiful drive (2wd) through to Jindabyne.
