Anyone turbo'ed up a 2F Cruiser motor?

Hey folks...

How's things?

Just a quick one. Has anyone whacked on a turbo to a 60 series 2F motor? is it up to the task? By all accounts its a strong motor. Probably not really worth it but if people have had success and it was relatively cost effective, I'd be keen...

No, no, no no no....it will blow....the crank only has 4 mains....you will never get it working right.....trade it on a new turbo territory and have some fun...

been out a few times with a guy who frequents this forum in a blown 4.5l 80 which he bought off another forum frequenter- pretty darn awsome. makes it pretty hard keeping up with him up bakers hill in my diesal

It used to accelerate best from 80km/hr

G'day there, If you could track down really old issues of Overlander magazine, I'm sure they did a road test of a turboed 2F. I was interested at the time as I had an FJ45. I would wonder about the cost effectiveness and reliability of it unless you were going to rebuild the motor before turboing it. In good nick, they're a fabulous reliable old motor. Would a 3F be a better bet if you were going to invest a bit of money ?

Ahh...my old FJ45...the longer I've not had it the better it seems...

Well i have not tried it yet but i am planning a supercharger on my 3f eng . I believe it will handle it aslong as all eng components are in good order & you do not over boost it. you may want to invest in a larger radiator. & dont forget to check the condition of your oil pump. if you do a teardown port & polish the head to allow better airflow & extraction .(yes i am a mechanic) your compression should not need altering aslong as you do not over boost. anyway have fun & let us know how you get on . 666toy

Its more high revs a 3F dont like which is why the turbo is probably unsuitable.
If you keep them under 3000 rpm they should be ok

Well actually, he is probably discussing all the possible causes for an intermittent kill situation that is besetting it but I don't think that has anything to do with the turbo per se.

Thank you Andrew for the heads up. I was nonplussed to find the pikkie of me and the faithful vehicle. We look of a similar vintage.
OK, When I bought the truck, the conversion had already been done. I don't have details of exactly what was done, however I was told it had been completely rebuilt and bearings/pistons/valves etc redone to turbo specs. A safari Turbo is fitted. If the info I was given is accurate, the truck has now done about 70000 km on the new motor. Total km for vehicle approacking 500000km. 5 speed man g/box. It all works very well. Lots of guts. I regularly lug heavy loads in desert conditions/ sand dunes etc. I put an auto locker in the front diffand have Aussie super springs at the back. The setup is surprisingly economical to run - much cheaper to operate than my previous diesel 4 runner. On highways I tend to keep to about 100kmh and about 2500 rpm in 5th gear. however the engine would happily go higher. I tend to protect 5th gear a little as I suspect that the turbo torque would stuff the 5th gear real quick going up hills or hauling my rather heavy off road camper trailer.
I might (only might) be able to get full details of the conversion, however this will take some time as the previous owner is inter state.

A close up of the car for those wondering ... I think they were made in 88/89 as I recall ... (of the 20th Century). I'm not sure - perhaps Mike is getting his centuries mixed up.

Ross, the turbo was fitted by Hume Exhaust towbars in Albury 02 6021 2477. Not sure whether they did the engine or not, but as the vehicle cvame from Wangarratta, it was in that area and they may know. Conversion/turbo probably done around 2002. Can't find a model number, but it is in for service next week and i will get a reading on the boost and see if they can locate identify the model.

Andrew. The toyo is a 1985 model. I was, of course, speaking relatively and not literally. Self and vehicle have done many km but are running well and approaching our primes. Never the less, would be interested in any mod conversions to fit a turbo to self.
