HJ47 2H - to turbo or not?

Hey there, I've got an 81 troopie that I don't want to part with. She's just clocked 300 thou. Just wondering if anyone has put a turbo on an old 2H. If so, was there a decent increase of power for the money? Did you need and intercooler as well?
What brand is the one to go for? Just want a bit more oomph out of the old girl, particularly when towing.

I turboed an old 2H on a 75 series a few years back.

It was a bad idea!

(actually it was a good idea but caused lots of grief) essentially the motor was in good nick before hand but the turbo caused accelerated wear which lead to an engine replacement...

If i had my time again it would have been cheaper and better to drop in a 6.2 V8.

That said, the turbo made an amazing difference to the trucks performance, especially after the new motor loosened up.

I turboed a 81 HJ47 tray. The vehicle had done 350,000 but the motor was a replacement and had done about 200,000. I would highly recommend it. I also put a 5 speed in it and that dropped the revs at 100kms to about 2400 instead of 2900.
Doesnt matter what turbo you use as long as it is the right size.Made a MASSIVE difference to the performance and towing ability and fuel economy stayed about the same. After I put it on the economy increased but power didnt change all that noticeably, but after getting it dynoed to allow for extra fuel for the turbo the economy dropped back to original but the pull was fantastic. I had no problems but just make sure you get it tuned with EGO meter to ensure your exhaust temperatures are OK.
I would highly recommend it. Otherwise maybe you can buy mine. It is for sale......

Hi Ray,
Sounds like the kind of difference I have been yearning for. How much did the turbo install cost, and what sort did you put on ? Also what 5 speed did you put in her, I've been toying with that idea too, or maybe an overdrive once she has the extra power.

I got the turbo from the trading post, cant remember what it was, IHI I think, havent got the vehicle here with me at the moment. It was supposedly a safari but it wasnt. It had an adapter plate to bolt on to the factory manifold. I put a 2.5 inch exhaust to the back of the cabin, if I did it again I would put the exhaust right to the back. The back wheel had to be cleaned all the time....
The turbo needed a rebuild when I got it, just make sure you get a really good oil line, i.e braided as you dont want it to blow off and dry out the turbo bearing..
I put a 5 speed out of a HJ75, 85 model in, it has the bigger idler shaft and is slightly less prone to wearing out than the earlier ones. Everything bolted up ok, basically the 5 speed is a 4 speed with about a 6cm extension on the back of the gearbox with the overdrive in it. The engine mounts bolted up OK, even the rear one only needed to be turned around. The front tailshaft out of the 75 bolted straight in I think, and I had the rear shortened to fit the box. All in all pretty easy conversion.
The turbo cost me about 700, and the rebuild another 900, exhaust about 200....

I think turboing a 2H with 300000 would be the death nell for the old girl.
On a younger engine without too much boost and keeping the EGTs down you can have some fun and get some life out of them but remember Toyota made a lot of modifications to built the 12HT and keep it going for a long time

Yeah, I'm a bit hesitant as I know the 2H is a bit long in the tooth, but just sussing out options, that one being the cheapest and easiest. Others I am considering are the 13BT transplant, as Roothy did to his in 4WD monthly, or the 12HT. Ultimately the Chev V8 would be awesome but probably way out of my price range. Another factor is that I live south of Darwin, so prices for transplants are inflated up here. Anyone had experience with the 13BT or 12HT in a 47?
