The exhaust system on my non turbo 4.2 diesel 99 GU Patrol is just about ready for replacement. Thought about doing the turbo thing but, I might just stick a set of extractors on it and a bigger exhaust. There the quandry starts. 2.5, 2.75 or 3 inch? Anybody had experience with any of the options?

not my bro, bro! Extractors are not going to give a performance increase anywhere near a turbo hence my comments. Turbo kit's generally include the exhaust also

I would go with extractors and either the 2.75" or 3".
The 3" single with extractors worked
well on my old 308 Holden

Try this thread from outer limits. Not sure if any of the 391 threads relate to 4.2 Patrol but no doubt someone has asked the same question. Questions answered by exhaust tech.

Hi Cracka,
I have a turbo off a 1999 Turbo 4.2 if you're interested. A cheap option for you. brownlie@bigpond.net.au
Cheers,
Chris.

I put a 2 1/2" exhaust on
mine a few years back, before the turbo. It sounded good but made no real difference to performance. I was advised against extractors by a mate who put them on as they made no difference to his motor.
Eventually, like others have said, I put a turbo on. Never looked back. It's expensive, but much worth it.
For naturally aspirated engines, either exhaust you mention will "help", how much is debatable.
Cheers
Brian

Thank you all for your time, the turbocharging seems to win hands down with everybody so perhaps I should expand a little. I have read, as 'Truckster" so eagerly points out, 20,000,000 threads on the turbocharging of TD4.2s. It seems the overwhelming problem that afflicts, albit SOME, motors with this modification is heat. It's clearly not an uncommon problem, and as I travel extensively in the bush, alone, it's clearly a risk (however minor) I don't really have to take.
Sure the boost in performance would be great but I don't need buckets full of hp. I did, a few years ago put extractors on a 2.4 diesel hi-lux and it made an enormous difference to the car. When I pointed this out to the mob who fitted it they commented that out of all the cars they fitted extractors to, the 2.4 toyota and the TD4.2 patrol were the most responsive to the fitment. At the time I didn't even own a patrol so he wasn't flogging product.
As far as expense is concerned I don't think that for what you pay a turbo and exhaust kit is expensive, and if my circumstances were a little less "remote" I might be tempted. However when reading up I hear horror stories with bigger radiators upgraded water pumps and banks of thermostatic fans not fixing an overheating problem. I live and work in a small country C.Q town with no access to radiator shops, 4X4 specialist workshops, or engine diagnostic specialists. I have recienty visited a site for a company who fits aftermarket turbos who actually reccomend NOT turbochargeing a non turbo TD motor. Upgrading a TD4.2T is fine though they say.
I am sure that all can see that while fitting a turbo into a city based car that ocasionally ventures into the central deserts or spends most weekends on camping trips with a little extreme adventures may be fine, I not really ready to throw the dice that far....yet. Hence the request for information from owners of non turbo GU Patrols. Like I said up the page a way, a rare beast indeed.
Having said all that, I do appreciate the input form you all, the interest shown and the benefit of your experiences.
