I am about to buy my first caravan and have spent considerable time looking at different models etc... the olympic seems to have the layout to suit us best.

Any advice on quality, strengths etc would be welcome. We woudl like to do some trips on dirt roads, not off road just dirt.

We have a Roadstar Voyager 3000 and they are well finished (above average I would say by comparison) and we love it!!
Compass Caravans are from the same stable with similar options but at a more affordable price.

Finish & Quality should be a high priority part of your criteria apart from layout.
Most layouts are generic and you will find similar layouts in all brands of vans.
Remember a no-frills price you get a no frills van.
Do a lot of homework & good luck to you,
cheers
Don

Pajeroman,

I don't know specifically about the Olympic vans so I won't comment on them but if they have the layout you want and you are buying new, then you could take the layout to any van manufacturer and they should "custom build" if they want your business.
If you are planning a bit of dirt road driving, I would suggest independant supsension as it will tow a heap better on the dirt if you have this. Not a necessity but it will help IMO.

Cheers, Trevor.

Pajeroman,

We have recently bought our first caravan and looked at a hell of a lot of vans. We went a cats whisker from buying an Olympic 1000 2003 model. This lovely retired couple owned it, did a couple of trips only and decided the whole caravanning thing was not them.
The reason we did not buy it was 1. Twin single beds, we prefer an island double and were worried about resale of the twin format. 2. We decided that we would prefer an off road style of van as we plan plenty of gravel during our trip, and it would suit the ride height of the cruiser better. We could have bought the Olympic, virtually as new with full annex walls, annex floor,Engel fridge, hydraulic jockey wheel, caravan cover,4 bar stabiliser kit,tow mirrors and quite a bit more for $19500 which we thought was a good buy. Ended up buying a very good 98 Golf Starliner ATV without the extras for $21500.
While searching the van world I spoke to a van dealer about various vans, i asked about OLympic and he told me they were very good quality, and he had none in stock so i thought that was reasonably unbiassed.

Good Luck

Greg
