G'day Guys,

I have a question in relation to acquiring the topographic map software for a Magellan GPS. I'm looking at buying the Explorist 500, it seems like a terrific unit with colour screen etc. The RRP of the basic unit is about $850. The topographic map software which is contained on an SD card is an additional $335. Does anyone know if you can buy non genuine DiscoverAus Street and Tracks (I'm trying really hard not to use the word pirated!!). Any advice would be much appreciated.

Cheers,

Ben and Bridge

I bought a new colour Magellan Meridian on eBay a couple of months back for just over $300 landed, a $28 SD card and Streets and Tracks on it and I was back in business after my Platinum was stolen earlier in the year.

Cost of ownership was a lot lower. The new software is tied to a particular user, but the version I have isn't fortunately.

Look at the Explorist packages with the preloaded SD card included, way cheaper that buying seperately.
You can not copy the topo maps from card to card as the security of the topo map program is linked in with SD card serial number.
If you really want it you will pay for it.

G'day Guys,

Thanks for the responses. Looks like I will just have to lay down the bucks. Buying technology sucks, you never really feel you get value for money. It seems to be superseeded so quickly.

Cheers,

I have an original CD of DiscoverAus Maps and Tracks here if you want to make me an offer!

My Meridian GPS is fubar so the CD is surplus to my requirements.

Cheers
