A couple of years ago I was forced to buy a second (spare) steel rim for a 2003 Prado. The reason for doing this was:
1. Couldn't afford another Mag.
2. Toyota, at that stage were the only source of 17"
wheels.
Back in May/June of this year I had to use the second spare. In doing so, it became evident the nuts will not fully secure a steel rim. This is because the alloy designed nuts are not compatible with steel rims.
Therefore, if your in a similar situation, it's very important the nuts are checked at least three times within the first thirty minutes (particularly of rough and corrugated roads).
Also be aware that the rubber surrounding the front CV joints is subject to damage if the vehicle is used in very rough country.
Regards
Kim

that's the situation with most alloys and steel rims, different nuts... pity someone didn't warn/advise you before having to have to use it.

Yes I had the same situation on my Prado.
The factory alloys come with a flat faced nut and when I bought a set of ROH aftermarket alloys I found that the nuts were different and they require a tapered face nut. So I went of back to the place that sold me the
wheels and politely asked why they did not check this out for me during the sale.
They apologised and promptly supplied 24 chrome capped nuts with the correct taper free of charge. I am all happy again but it does mean i carry two sets of nuts now as I use one of the factory alloys as a second spare.
Cheers
Muddy
